Job Description

The Department of Radiology, a clinical department of the School of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), invites applications from highly qualified individuals for tenure-earning and tenured positions at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, commensurate with experience and qualifications. We seek highly accomplished physician-scientists with strong nuclear medicine-related clinical and research interests, including molecular imaging and theranostics, and a demonstrated commitment to collaborative, interdisciplinary scholarship and leadership. Qualified candidates must hold an MD or MD/PhD degree and possess a proven ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary clinical and research teams.

The Division of Molecular Imaging & Therapeutics (MI&T) at UAB provides comprehensive clinical nuclear medicine services supporting UAB Hospitals and affiliated clinical programs. The division delivers diagnostic and therapeutic molecular imaging services across oncology, neurology, cardiology, and other subspecialties, with a growing emphasis on theranostics and radiopharmaceutical therapy. Clinical services include PET/CT, SPECT/CT, targeted radiotracer imaging, and radionuclide therapies, delivered in close collaboration with multidisciplinary clinical teams.

The division currently comprises a multidisciplinary group of nine clinical and research faculty, supported by experienced technologists, physicists, radiochemists, and administrative staff. MI&T plays a central role in patient care within the O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center and collaborates closely with neurology, cardiology, oncology, and surgical services across the health system.

The Division Director and Section Chief will provide strategic and operational leadership for the MI&T clinical enterprise. Responsibilities include oversight of clinical operations and quality, faculty recruitment and development, programmatic growth of diagnostic and therapeutic services, coordination with hospital and departmental leadership, and stewardship of divisional resources. The Division Director is expected to foster a strong clinical culture while supporting and enabling faculty research activities. While the Division Director may also be an active investigator, personal research productivity is not required, provided there is demonstrated commitment to supporting and advancing faculty.

UAB Radiology has a rapidly expanding health system with strengths in molecular imaging and therapeutics, supported by robust infrastructure including an ACSI TR24 cyclotron, GE Signa TOF PET/MRI, GE Omni 32 PET/CT, and small animal PET/CT, SPECT/CT, MRI, and other modalities. Current initiatives include finalizing agreements for the Omni Legend 128 and Omni Legend 24 cardiac PET systems, as well as the recent acquisition of the StarGuide SPECT/CT system. These investments enhance imaging capabilities, increase operational capacity, and strengthen the department's position as a leader in advanced molecular imaging and nuclear medicine. Future directions include expansion of clinical and investigational theranostics programs, increased clinical trial activity, and growth in disease-focused molecular imaging services.

Candidates who join this environment must be committed to developing a strong extramurally funded research program, excellence in trainee education at the residency, fellowship, and graduate levels, and meaningful service to the University and the profession. We are seeking candidates who apply innovative approaches to molecular imaging and theranostics. Areas of particular interest to UAB include, but are not limited to, radiopharmaceutical therapy, clinical theranostics trials, radiation biology, targeted radiotherapy, novel PET and SPECT tracers, AI-assisted molecular imaging, and oncologic or neurodegenerative disease applications. Expertise in one or more of these areas is expected, rather than all.

Successful applicants will demonstrate a clear and innovative vision for nuclear medicine, a strong record of scholarly achievement and research excellence, and a commitment to mentoring residents, fellows, graduate students, and other trainees. Candidates are expected to establish, maintain, and expand a robust extramurally funded research program supported by the NIH and other federal agencies, foundations, and/or industry partners, consistent with their area of expertise. The successful candidate will possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and contribute to ongoing departmental, institutional, and multidisciplinary research and clinical initiatives.

To be competitive for a tenured position, candidates must be nationally recognized for their research accomplishments. Tenure-eligible candidates must demonstrate an outstanding vision for independent scholarship. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The Department fosters strong collaborative interactions with the School of Medicine, UAB Hospital, the O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (ADRC), and the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) Center for Advanced Research, all located in the heart of Birmingham. UAB Hospital's main campus is the fifth largest hospital in the United States. The O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center is one of 51 NCI-designated cancer centers nationwide, supporting more than 400 scientists and physician-scientists engaged in basic, translational, clinical, and population-based cancer research. The UAB ADRC is an NIA-designated center dedicated to improving dementia care and advancing research in the Deep South. UAB is one of nine APDA Centers for Advanced Research in the United States.
