The Opportunity - Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Specialist

Location: Peterborough, ON

Position Type: Full-Time (40 hours/week, no overtime)

Contract Duration: October 2026 for an initial six (6) month term with the possibility of extension

Salary: $70,000 to $100,000

We are seeking an experienced Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Specialist to support one of our client sites in Peterborough, Ontario. This position is ideal for a safety professional with experience in manufacturing environments who is passionate about fostering a strong safety culture, driving continuous improvement, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supporting environmental stewardship initiatives.

What You'll Do
  • Full-time opportunity working 40 hours per week with no overtime requirement
  • Lead and influence site-wide safety and environmental initiative
  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve site Health, Safety, and Environmental strategies aligned with client objectives.
  • Provide contractor oversight for decommissioning, construction, and special projects while supporting facility safety program requirements.
  • Promote annual safety and environmental goals and improvement plans.
  • Foster a strong safety culture and environmental stewardship mindset across the site.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and cross-functional teams to achieve health, safety, and environmental objectives.
  • Lead site programs including Safety First, Life Saving Rules, Serious Injury and Fatality (SIF) Prevention, Risk Assessment, Contractor Safety, Behaviour-Based Safety (BBS), and Near Miss Reporting.
  • Ensure effective implementation and continuous improvement of safety and environmental programs.
  • Identify risks, implement mitigation measures, and promote proactive hazard reporting and prevention.
  • Deliver safety training, communications, and awareness programs for employees, contractors, and visitors.
  • Monitor safety and environmental performance using relevant metrics and KPIs.
  • Analyze trends and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Develop, track, and verify corrective and preventive actions.
  • Support accurate and timely reporting through corporate and regulatory reporting systems.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable regulations, standards, and company policies.
  • Investigate safety incidents and ensure effective corrective actions are implemented.
  • Provide technical guidance and subject matter expertise on health and safety matters to site functions and project teams.


What We're Looking For
  • Minimum 3 years of health and safety experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in Safety Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biological Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting incident investigations, risk assessments, and contractor safety management.
  • Experience working with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management systems is preferred.
  • Certified Safety Manager (or equivalent safety certification) is considered an asset.
  • Experience within food, beverage, pharmaceutical, or chemical manufacturing environments is preferred.
  • Project management knowledge and practical experience.
  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and food, beverage, or pharmaceutical processing environments is an asset.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Word, Project, and PowerPoint.
