Job Description

We have an opening for a Health Physicist to support the radiation safety program within the Radiation Protection Functional Area (RPFA). This position directly supports the radiological procedures and records group where you will work to develop and implement radiation protection safety program documents such as technical basis documents, operational procedures, and forms. This position is in the Environment, Safety and Health (ESH) Directorate.

This position may offer a hybrid schedule after a probationary period; specifics vary based on team and organizational needs.

This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, Qualification, and Certification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities. It will be filled at either level based on experience, with additional responsibilities assigned to candidates hired at the higher level.

You will
  • Evaluate and provide input on radiation safety policies and procedures that are complex and may not be well defined. Lead efforts to draft, review, and maintain related institutional documents and other contents.
  • Conduct assessments and audits necessary to comply with applicable regulatory requirements. Work independently and with minimal direction. Lead audits, inspections and site verifications in coordination with internal and external entities.
  • Act as the point of contact for radiation protection program functional elements (e.g., contamination control, posting and labeling, radiation generating devices, etc.).
  • Lead the development and maintenance of radiation protection program documents and processes. Routinely interact with professional colleagues, internal senior management, and other organizations across and outside the Laboratory on advanced Health Physics (HP) technical areas and projects/programs.
  • Provide guidance and clarification on a diverse range of complex issues. Analyze and resolve radiation safety program implementation questions from field radiological control personnel on matters related to HP field operations.
  • Respond to radiological emergencies and incidents on site. Participate in event investigations and make recommendations to all levels of management to prevent recurrence.
  • Provide periodic support to programmatic field operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the TSS.4 level
  • Act as a subject matter expert for the radiation protection program, leading and directing tasks, setting broad visions, and acting as a spokesperson while working with all levels of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide solutions to highly complex HP issues that may involve parameters that are intangible and require in-depth analysis.
  • Apply highly advanced knowledge and substantial experience to advance radiation protection methods at the Laboratory.
  • Independently lead high visibility projects and/or working groups to support ESH directorate initiatives.


Qualifications
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor's degree in health physics, Nuclear Engineering, Radiation Physics, Radiation Protection, or a related STEM field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of Operational and/or Technical Health Physics Fundamentals suitable for designing effective radiation safety programs.
  • Experience interpreting and applying DOE, NRC, or other applicable radiation protection requirements and translating them into institutional procedures, program controls, and practical field guidance.
  • Experience conducting or leading radiation protection program assessments, audits, inspections, or site verifications and identifying deficiencies.
  • Experience developing and maintaining radiation protection policies, procedures, technical basis documents, assessment reports, or other formal program documentation.
  • Experience supporting radiological event or emergency response, investigations, causal analyses, and corrective-action development.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and advise RPFA management.
  • Effective organizational skills with the attention to detail necessary to lead multiple tasks in a demanding environment with conflicting priorities, tight and changing deadlines, and frequent interruptions while providing high-level customer service and good follow-through.

Additional qualifications at the TSS.4 level
  • Subject matter expertise in Operational and Technical Health Physics Fundamentals suitable for designing effective radiation safety programs.
  • Substantial experience in applying and/or developing highly complex technical, industry leading practices and/or business principles for the management of NRC- or DOE-based Radiation Protection Programs.
  • Expert verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and advise RPFA management.
  • Experience representing a radiation protection program with senior management, regulators, external assessors, or other stakeholders.

Qualifications We Desire
  • Experience supporting NRC- or DOE-based Radiation Protection Programs, preferably at a DOE national laboratory, including applying or developing industry-leading technical practices and business principles for program management.
  • Applicants holding an active DOE Q clearance.
  • Professional certification within the field of health physics, such as NRRPT or CHP.
  • Advanced technical writing experience developing formal radiation protection documents spanning multiple functional program areas, such as technical basis documents, procedures, assessment reports, and DOE-facing program documentation.
  • Experience leading or contributing to root cause analyses, and/or corrective action development requiring coordination across radiation protection functional elements.
  • Advanced proficiency in document-development tools, including Microsoft Word features for creating consistently formatted radiological documents (styles, automated heading numbering, TOC), and Adobe Acrobat DC for designing custom fillable forms with calculated fields, field validation, scripts, and digital signature workflows.

Pay Range: $154,950- $235,692 Annually

$154,950- $196,476 Annually for the TSS.3 level

$185,850- $235,692 Annually for the TSS.4 level

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee's position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.
