HEALTH INSURANCE UNDERWRITER MANAGER

Description:

This position will interact with all members of our staff as well as many clients and carrier partners. The primary challenges are the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously, lead and develop underwriting staff, communicate effectively with a wide range of personalities and communication styles, and provide strategic underwriting guidance in complex situations. Training and support are provided both corporately and locally. This position will have minimal travel requirements, if any. The Underwriter Manager will serve as a technical leader and people manager for the underwriting function. This role is responsible for overseeing underwriting workflows, reviewing and approving complex rating and plan design analyses, mentoring underwriting staff, and ensuring high-quality, timely deliverables to clients.

Some of the specific duties are listed below:

  • Prepare, review, and approve rating and plan design quotes within Milliman's underwriting models
  • Ensure proposals and underwriting analyses are accurate, complete, and delivered on time
  • Oversee the day-to-day workflow of underwriting staff, including prioritization of assignments and quality review of work
  • Mentor, train, and develop underwriting staff to build technical underwriting skills, business judgment, and client communication abilities
  • Collaborate with clients to gather additional information needed for underwriting decisions or to explain underwriting outcomes
  • Coordinate with senior leadership on complex cases, escalated issues, and strategic client situations
  • Provide feedback and recommendations for improvement in rating models, underwriting processes, training programs, and client interaction
  • Establish and reinforce underwriting standards, best practices, and quality control procedures
  • Support hiring, onboarding, and performance management of underwriting staff as needed
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for complex underwriting matters and carrier interactions

Location:

This position is based out of the Milliman office in Omaha, Nebraska. Candidates hired into this role must be willing to work onsite full-time.
