Overview:

We are seeking a Health and Safety Professional - Programs who will develop, manage, and evaluate the implementation of Industrial Hygiene (IH) related worker safety and health (WSH) programs. This person will also provide consultation/mentoring for the purpose of improving the integration and effectiveness of the WSH Management System across the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

This position involves being part of a team that produces and manages IH and H&S programs and procedures that allow research scientists to perform cutting-edge science in a safe and compliant manner. This position resides in the Industrial Hygiene Programs Team in the Health and Safety Technical Services Group of the Safety and Operations Services Division, at ORNL.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Develop and maintain corporate and division level IH and WSH programs and procedures.
  • Perform periodic surveillances and assessments of assigned IH programs to verify compliance, program implementation and effectiveness and evaluate work practices, controls, and corrective actions.
  • Participate in critiques, fact-finding events, inspections, audits, and advise management on regulatory requirements.
  • Provide leadership and assist with the implementation of Integrated Safety Management (ISM) into the work planning and execution process.
  • Provide technical support to ORNL management in the application of regulatory requirements, procedures and standards for IH program performance.
  • Provide professional H&S support to all levels of management and support H&S assessment activities in compliance with 10 CFR 851.
  • Interact closely with customers and support other team members in work planning and hazard assessment.

Basic Qualifications:
  • A BS/BA degree in occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, science, engineering, or relevant technical field with a minimum of 5 years of experience in management of industrial hygiene and other health and safety regulatory programs, or a MS degree in occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, science, engineering or relevant technical field with a minimum of 4 years of experience in management of industrial hygiene and other health and safety regulatory programs.
  • Experience in field oversight/assessment of industrial hygiene performance and compliance with applicable local, state, and federal H&S standards and regulations.
  • Experience in the recognition, evaluation, and control of chemical/physical hazards.
  • Knowledge of OSHA standards and other applicable industrial hygiene/industrial safety consensus standards.
  • Demonstrated excellence in leadership, interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • CIH and/or CSP certifications.
  • DOE-related work experience.
  • Experience working with personal computer software including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.


Special Requirements:
  • Q clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
  • Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
