Job Description

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Research and Teaching Services Department provides user-centered and pedagogically informed research and reference services and a comprehensive literacies (information, AI, data, media, etc.) teaching and learning program for the vibrant and diverse Montclair State University community. Through consultation, teaching, and outreach, the Department promotes and sustains excellence in teaching, research, and scholarship at all levels of the University. The Department Head provides professional leadership for the Research Services department and staff, including the coordination of a team of full- and part-time librarians who provide a range of research and reference services, online and in-person instruction classes, workshops, and research appointments.

This 12-month, tenure-track position has the concurrent academic rank of Associate Professor.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Coordinates department faculty and staff, including a team of tenured and tenure-track librarians. Supervises department staff, adjuncts, and student workers. Responsible for overseeing information literacy and instruction, research and reference services, and scheduling classes and workshops.
  • Participates in Research Librarian responsibilities, including: teaching, reference services, research appointments, and library outreach as the liaison for one or more academic departments.
  • Leads assessment for areas of oversight and recommends departmental policies and procedures. Collects and analyzes user and other data; prepares reports for library leadership and other stakeholders.
  • Coordinates onboarding and mentoring for new department faculty and staff. Hires and coordinates the work of temporary and adjunct librarians.
  • Facilitates training for new librarians, most intensely during their first semester of work, with ongoing support through the tenure-track period.
  • Schedules and conducts regular meetings of the department.
  • Advises on departmental, library, and campus projects and issues. Promotes participation in interdepartmental and campus initiatives.
  • Works in partnership with the Bloomfield Campus Library on intercampus operations and initiatives.
  • Represents Research and Teaching Services on the Library Administrative Team, serving as the primary contact for Teaching and Research Services issues.
  • Works closely with the Dean, Associate Dean and other members of the Library Administrative Team on operational issues and strategic planning.
  • Serves on Library and University committees.
  • Participates in professional associations and contributes to the scholarship of the profession to ensure departmental activities and services align with emerging research and trends in the profession.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

RESEARCH AND TEACHING SERVICES

The Research and Teaching Services department supports the curricular and research needs of the university through teaching, research consultations, workshops, and reference services. In addition to liaising with academic departments and programs, librarians are directly involved with SEEDs, Montclair State University's general education curriculum, where Educated Citizenry (critical information literacy) is a core value. Librarians work closely with the Bloomfield College Library to make the University Libraries hubs for student success, intellectual exploration, research, and community engagement.

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED:
  • Master's Degree in Library Science (or equivalent degree) from an ALA-accredited library school.
  • A minimum of five years of significant professional library experience (post M.L.S or equivalent degree) with responsibility in areas related to public services including reference, teaching and outreach.
  • A strong record of effective teaching and instructional design.
  • Experience in an academic or research library.
  • Familiarity with the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, critical pedagogy, and/or current information literacy teaching principles and practices.
  • Demonstrated leadership supporting employee professional development.
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills with the ability to foster positive working relationships and build partnerships.
  • Experience leading collegial and productive teams.
  • A record of professional service and scholarly activity.
  • Strong cultural awareness and demonstrated commitment to supporting learning for all students.


PREFERRED:
  • Second Master's degree in an academic discipline.
  • Experience providing liaison services (including collection development).
  • Experience creating online learning objects/materials and teaching online.
  • Familiarity with Springshare products.
  • Fluency in a second language, Spanish preferred.

Salary Range
$106,300.00-$161,900.00 Annually
