Full Job Description
Blank Street is seeking a sharp, hands-on **Global Tax Manager** to join as our first dedicated tax hire and build our tax function from the ground up. This role owns all indirect tax workstreams across our existing footprint (US multi-state and local sales and use tax, and UK VAT) with a mandate to revamp and optimize how tax works across every sales channel: in-store, app and subscriptions, as well as e-commerce sales. As Blank Street continues to expand into new regions and territories, you'll lead the tax side of every market entry, from initial research and technical memos through to registration, implementation, and ongoing filings and remittances. Beyond indirect tax, you'll support on global transfer pricing initiatives, and liaise with our external tax accountants on our direct tax compliance - owning timelines, review, and quality - while preparing ancillary returns and studies in-house (think US R&D tax credit and UK capital allowance studies). Over time, you'll build the internal capabilities, processes, and systems to bring core tax filings fully in-house. This is a high-impact, high-ownership role for someone who takes pride in technical rigor, precision, and continuous improvement, affording you the ownership to be equal parts researcher, builder, and operator. The ideal professional is someone who wants to be the go-to resource for all things tax as we grow globally, while developing the function from the ground up. This is an in-person role based in our New York office, reporting to the Global Controller and partnering closely with Accounting, Product and Digital teams, as well as our external tax advisors. **What You'll Own** - Lead all indirect tax workstreams across our existing footprint (US multi-state and local sales and use tax and UK VAT) owning calculations, filings, remittances, reconciliations, and exemption management end-to-end. - Revamp and optimize our current indirect tax processes across all sales channels (in-store, app and subscriptions, as well as e-commerce), including taxability mapping, POS and tax engine configuration, automation, and controls. - Own the tax workstream for new market entries: research jurisdiction-specific requirements, draft technical tax memos, tax ID registrations, and lead each new jurisdiction through implementation to ongoing filings and remittances. - Support and drive global transfer pricing initiatives, including intercompany arrangements and agreements, policy design, and documentation across our US, UK, and EU entities. - Collaborate with the Controller on overseeing direct tax filings prepared by our external tax accountants across all jurisdictions. Own timelines, first-level review and quality, while supporting the income tax provision calculations and cash tax forecasting. - Prepare ancillary returns, forms, and studies in-house, including US R&D tax credit studies, UK capital allowance studies, franchise and gross receipts taxes, and personal property tax filings. - Own the global tax calendar across all entities and jurisdictions; registrations, estimated payments, extensions, and filings - so nothing slips as we scale. - Monitor nexus, permanent establishment, and registration thresholds as we grow, proactively surfacing exposures and remediation options (including voluntary disclosure agreements) before they trigger regulatory scrutiny. - Be the point of contact for tax audits, notices, and authority inquiries across jurisdictions, including state and local sales tax audits, IRS and state notices, and HMRC inquiries. - Develop, document, and maintain tax policies, procedures, and internal controls, ensuring consistency, audit readiness, and compliance across all regions. - Partner cross-functionally with Accounting, Product and Digital teams, as well as with our external advisors - on expansion planning, structuring, compliance, and day-to-day tax questions. - Build the internal capabilities, systems, and documentation needed to transition core tax filings in-house over time, laying the foundation for Blank Street's tax function as we scale. **Who You Are** - Bachelor's degree in Accounting/Finance, Tax, or a related field; CPA/ACA, EA, CTA, or equivalent qualification strongly preferred. - 6+ years of progressive tax experience, ideally combining public accounting (Big 4 or similar) with an in-house role in a multi-entity or fast-growth environment (retail, hospitality, or multi-site businesses preferred). - Deep indirect tax expertise across US multi-state sales and use tax and UK VAT, including nexus analysis, taxability research, registrations, filings, and remittances. - Working knowledge of direct tax and transfer pricing (corporate income tax compliance, tax provisions, and intercompany arrangements) with the judgment to manage external advisors credibly and review their work critically. - Strong research and writing skills: you cleanly assess new jurisdiction requirements and drive primary-source research to a clear, well-documented tax memo and an implemented, repeatable process. - Experience with tax engines, POS platforms, and ERP systems (e.g., Avalara/DAVO, Vertex, Anrok, Square, NetSuite, or similar), and strong Excel skills for reconciliations and data analysis. - A builder's mindset - you're energized by being the first dedicated tax hire, comfortable creating processes from scratch, and able to flex between conceptualization and hands-on execution. - Ability to clearly communicate complex tax matters to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, from store operations to executives and external parties. - Ability to work independently, own the tax calendar and deliverables end-to-end, while proactively escalate risks or issues. - Approaches work with a team-first, detail-oriented mindset, understanding the importance of discretion, accuracy, and cross-functional collaboration. **Benefits & Perks** - $120,000 - $150,000 annual salary - Blank Street, in good faith, believes that the posted salary range is accurate for this role at the time of posting. Our salary ranges are rooted in the desire to pay competitively relative to our organization size and industry, reflecting just one part of the total compensation package. Blank Street may pay more or less than the posted range based on factors such as relevant experience and skills, qualifications and location, among others. This range may be modified in the future. - Equity package - 15 days of paid annual leave (on top of company-observed holidays and sick time) - Three health plan options, with full coverage available for two employee-only tiers - Commuter benefits - Parental leave - Bereavement leave - Exclusive access to our coveted Regulars program - yes, that means free coffee, matcha and more! - Regular social outings with the team - Free Blank Street swag
