Job DescriptionThe Texas General Land Office is seeking a Director of Special Projects & Strategic Initiatives within the Executive Administration Department of the agency.
Performs managerial work providing direction and guidance in strategic operations and planning. Work involves establishing the strategic plan and setting goals and objectives; developing policies, procedures, and guidelines; establishing priorities, standards, and measurement tools for determining progress in meeting goals; coordinating and evaluating program activities or business functions. Supervises the work of others. Works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
The Director of Special Projects and Strategic Initiatives serves as a strategic advisor and project manager for the GLO Executive Team. Work involves leading highpriority, crossfunctional agency projects; coordinating implementation of executive priorities; overseeing organizational improvement initiatives; and ensuring recommendations resulting from audits, assessments, and management reviews are successfully implemented.
What Your Contributions to the GLO Will be: - Directs the implementation of executive priorities by developing, executing, and monitoring agencywide strategic initiatives that improve organizational performance; translating executive direction into actionable plans with measurable outcomes; and recommending priorities based on organizational needs and resources.
- Serves as an executive project manager. Oversee executive special projects by managing highprofile, crossdepartmental initiatives; developing project plans, timelines, and performance measures; coordinating executive reporting; and identifying risks and mitigation strategies.
- Coordinates the implementation of audit, review, studies, and assessment recommendations; promotes continuous process improvement through process evaluation and performance measurement; and recommends policies, procedures, and improvements to enhance organizational efficiency and accountability. Oversees and tracks auditrelated inquiries and mitigation activities and provides datadriven recommendations to strengthen operational efficiency.
- Coordinates executive initiatives by fostering crossdepartment collaboration; facilitating executive workgroups and implementing teams; and keeping leadership informed of progress, risks, and challenges. Partners with leadership to ensure technology initiatives align with agency priorities, including system enhancements and integrations.
- Oversees performance monitoring by developing dashboards, tracking progress toward strategic goals, preparing leadership reports, and recommending corrective actions to ensure effective implementation.
Minimum Qualifications: - Graduation from an accredited fouryear college or university in business administration, public administration, organizational leadership or a related field.
- Five (5) years of experience managing complex projects and supervising staff.
- Experience in the areas of strategic planning, developing project plans, and performance monitoring.
- Related experience may substitute for education on a yearforyear basis.
Location Requirements: This position is based in Austin, TX. Candidates must be currently located in the Austin area or willing to relocate at their own expense. Relocation assistance is not provided.
Preferred Qualifications: - Experience working in state government.
Physical Requirements: This position requires the employee to primarily perform sedentary office work; however, mobility (moving around the worksite) is routinely required to carry out some duties. This position requires extensive computer, telephone and client/ customer contact and communication. It requires the ability to move and position oneself as needed for filing and similar routine office duties. The job also requires normal cognitive abilities requiring the ability to learn, recall, and apply certain practices and policies. It requires the stamina to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions. Ability to read printed materials and computer screens. The individual must be able to move and transport records, documents, boxes, and all related information and materials, weighing up to 20 pounds when required.
