The Great Bear project is a development-stage asset located in the renowned and prolific Red Lake mining district, and represents one of the most exciting recent gold discoveries globally. The project has excellent potential to become a top-tier deposit that could support a large, long-life mine complex. Kinross' comprehensive exploration and development program will aim to support the vision of a quality, high-grade, open-pit mine and a longer-term, sizeable underground mine.

Job Summary

The Great Bear Geotechnical Lead is responsible for planning, scheduling, and overseeing all geotechnical work conducted on site. This role include will include site preparation, stakeholder coordination, data collection, and follow-up of geotechnical activities related to investigations, instrumentation, and construction works for geotechnical infrastructure such as tailings management facilities (TMFs), stockpiles, dams, and overburden excavations.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

• Collaborate closely with responsible on-site personnel and project stakeholders.
• Perform all work safely and in accordance with Kinross standards and site-specific safety procedures (including drilling and excavation activities).
• Oversee drilling, sampling, and in situ testing programs (e.g., SPT, CPT, vane shear, density testing).
• Plan, schedule, and supervise field investigations including boreholes, test pits, and geophysical surveys.
• Coordinate field activities with drillers, contractors, surveyors, operations, health and safety, permitting, geology, and environmental teams.
• Supervise the installation, monitoring, and management of geotechnical instrumentation and associated data (e.g., piezometers, inclinometers, settlement plates).
• Conduct or oversee field quality control testing, including density, compaction, and moisture content testing during construction.
• Support laboratory testing programs by sampling and conducting gradation and other tests in the GBR laboratory.
• Review contractor means and methods and verify compliance with geotechnical specifications and drawings.
• Identify, assess, and manage geotechnical risks encountered during investigations and construction activities.
• Prepare, clear, and ensure accurate field reports and documentation.
• Assist with the interpretation of field and laboratory data to support design recommendations and technical reports.
• Provide on-site technical support and guidance during earthworks, foundation preparation, and construction activities.
• Communicate observations, findings, and recommendations to senior engineers and project managers.

Qualification and Skill Requirements

A bachelor's degree in Geotechnical or Civil Engineering, or related discipline, with a minimum of 3-5 years of experience in the mining industry.

• Capable of learning and adpating to new software.
• High attention to detail, with excellent organizational skills.

Work Conditions

This position is based in Red Lake, Ontario. Local candidates, or those willing to relocate with relocation assistance, will be given priority for this position. The schedule for this position is 5X2.

Compensation and Total Rewards

The base salary range for the Geotechnical Lead is $145,000 to $170,000 + Short Term Incentive Bonus, + Group Benefit Coverage.

The hiring range reflects our targeted compensation framework for the role. The actual offer will be determined through a comprehensive evaluation of each candidate's experience, capabilities, and potential impact, along with consideration of internal equity, team structure, and benchmark market data for similar positions.
