Job Title: Wellsite Geologist
Job DescriptionWe are seeking a Wellsite / Operations Geologist (Well Planning Geologist) III to support unconventional oil and gas development through high-quality subsurface interpretation and horizontal well planning. This role is responsible for developing and refining geological models, supporting well placement decisions, and ensuring accurate geologic interpretation is translated into effective drilling plans.
The ideal candidate will have mid-to-advanced level experience in unconventional resource plays, with a strong background in horizontal well planning, subsurface correlation, and well execution support. This position works closely with drilling, completions, and subsurface teams to optimize well placement and reduce geologic uncertainty.
Responsibilities- Correlate and refine target windows for horizontal well planning using subsurface interpretations, well logs, and offset well data.
- Develop and deliver well planning products including structure maps, target maps, cross-sections, and geologic target windows.
- Support drilling execution teams through pre-spud planning and operational alignment.
- Identify geologic variability, formation changes, and subsurface risks impacting well placement and drilling performance.
- Communicate geologic constraints, risks, and recommendations to drilling and operations teams.
- Incorporate offset well data, drilling results, and lessons learned into updated geological models and planning templates.
- Continuously improve well planning workflows and development strategies based on operational feedback.
- Ensure execution learnings are integrated into future development planning and target optimization.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including drilling, completions, reservoir, and operations personnel.
- Provide real-time or near-real-time geological support during well planning and execution phases.
- Maintain accurate geological interpretations, records, and supporting documentation.
- Participate in technical reviews, planning sessions, and cross-functional coordination meetings.
Skills and Qualifications- Master's degree in Geoscience or related discipline preferred.
- Mid to advanced level experience in well planning, operations geology, or subsurface geoscience roles.
- Strong experience in unconventional oil and gas development; Midland Basin experience preferred.
- Proficiency with Kingdom interpretation software (required).
- Experience with Petrel software (optional but preferred).
- Strong understanding of horizontal drilling concepts, wellbore placement, and geosteering principles.
- Ability to interpret well logs, seismic data, and offset well information.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills related to subsurface uncertainty.
- Excellent communication skills with ability to work across multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to translate complex geologic interpretations into actionable drilling recommendations.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in subsurface modeling and reporting.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced operational environment with multiple stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience supporting unconventional shale development programs.
- Experience working closely with drilling and geosteering teams.
- Familiarity with well execution workflows and drilling optimization strategies.
- Experience integrating drilling results into updated geologic models.
- Strong background in structural geology and stratigraphic interpretation.
Work Environment- Office-based with strong interaction with field and drilling operations teams.
- Periodic support of active drilling operations as needed.
- Collaborative, fast-paced environment supporting multi-well development programs.
- Occasional travel to field locations or operations centers may be required.
