Job Description

Who You'll Work With

We are seeking a seasoned meteorologist to serve as a leader within a local utility's meteorology team. This full-time, in-person role is central to enhancing weather intelligence and integrating meteorological insights into operations, emergency planning and response, engineering, and capital investment decisions. The Principal Meteorologist will lead forecasting efforts, guide tool and process development, partner with key internal stakeholders, and serve as the primary liaison with external agencies to advance fire weather science. This is a contract position with an opportunity to apply for the permanent role.

What You'll Do

  • Serve as the lead forecaster and meteorological advisor, leading the integration of real-time and forecasted meteorological data to better manage the impacts of weather on the electric system and identify vulnerabilities.
  • Monitor and analyze a wide range of meteorological data, including surface observations, satellite imagery, NEXRAD Doppler radar, and numerical weather prediction data, using AWIPS to maintain situational awareness and inform operational decisions.

  • Deliver short-, medium-, and long-range forecasts, including daily and seasonal outlooks, with special emphasis on fire weather conditions such as Santa Ana winds, heat waves, and winter storms. Additionally, prepare non-routine weather reports to support critical weather events, Department Emergency Operations Center activations, and major construction activities.
  • Continually maintain and enhance procedures for monitoring LADWP's weather network and associated alerting.
  • Continuously improve forecasting accuracy and efficiency through the adoption of new technologies and process enhancements.
  • Collaborate with engineering and operations teams to integrate weather data into operational procedures, wildfire mitigation strategies, and community resilience planning.
  • Act as the primary liaison with the National Weather Service, Cal Fire, universities, and other research institutions to advance meteorological science and technology.
  • Support Department Emergency Operations Center activations with shift-based overtime or on-call work, including nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours.
  • This position's work mode is in person.

What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Atmospheric Science, Environmental Science, or a related field
  • Certified Consulting Meteorologist (CCM) designation preferred.

  • 8+ years of operational forecasting experience in a challenging environment; utility experience preferred.

  • Mastery of theoretical meteorology, including the dynamics of the atmosphere, mesoscale meteorology, and the application of computer methods of numerical weather analysis and prediction.
  • Advanced knowledge of fire weather concepts and fire weather forecasting techniques.

  • Proficiency in meteorological software and tools.

  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to translate complex meteorological data for technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Demonstrated ability to support cross-functional initiatives and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Must be able to manage time effectively, perform under pressure, and meet deadlines in a fairly fast-paced environment.
