The ideal candidate will be responsible for performing the following duties:
  • Under the administrative direction of the Insurance Commissioner, this position will serve as the General Counsel for the agency and will provide legal advice to the executive team and others in the agency regarding applicable statutes, rules, and regulations.
  • Will perform advanced legal research, prepare legal memorandums and briefs on complex insurance issues, draft bills and rules, and other related documents.
  • Analyze and summarize laws from other states related to insurance issues pending the state of West Virginia.
  • This role involves representing the agency in matters before the Legislature and testifying before legislative committees regarding bills and study topics, as well as collaborating with committee counsel on these matters.
  • The selected candidate will correspond with legislators and the public as needed when inquiries are received.
  • Manages all outside litigation and personal matters before administrative bodies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications
Training: Admission to practice law in the State of West Virginia.
Experience: Nine years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in the practice of law, including trial experience in administrative or judicial proceedings.

Substitution: One year of full-time or equivalent part-time paid employment as an attorney with the agency to which assigned shall be considered the equivalent of two years of other qualifying experience.
