Primary Purpose of the Position: About the OpportunityFayetteville State University (FSU) invites applications for the position of General Counsel and Vice Chancellor for Legal, Audit, Risk and Compliance. Reporting directly to the Chancellor, the General Counsel and Vice Chancellor serve as the University's chief legal counsel and a strategic advisor to University leadership. The position provides counsel to the Chancellor, Board of Trustees, senior administrators, and members of the University community while supporting FSU's mission and priorities.

About the TeamThe Division of Legal, Audit, Risk and Compliance (LARC), led by the General Counsel and Vice Chancellor for Legal, Audit, Risk and Compliance, is composed of the Office of Legal Affairs, Office of the Internal Auditor, Office of Risk and Compliance, and the Ombuds Office. The primary purpose of the Division is to assist the University in carrying out its mission by managing its ethical, legal, and regulatory responsibilities.
About the RoleReporting to the Chancellor, the General Counsel and Vice Chancellor for Legal, Audit, Risk and Compliance serves as Fayetteville State University's chief legal advisor, providing strategic legal counsel to University leadership.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Serve as the chief legal advisor, providing strategic legal counsel to the Chancellor, Board of Trustees, and senior administrators.
- Lead, supervise, mentor, and develop a division of attorneys and support staff whose responsibilities include addressing matters that impact the University.
- Advise members of the University community on applicable state and federal laws, regulations, governance, accreditation, employment law, student affairs, compliance, contracts, and institutional risk management.
- Collaborate with University leaders on initiatives, policies, and operations to support compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
- Advise on the development and review of contracts, policies, procedures, legislation, regulations, and other legal issues affecting the University.
Minimum Education And Experience Requirements: - Earned J.D. from an ABA accredited law school.
- Member of or eligible to become (within one year of hire) a member of the North Carolina State Bar.
- At least seven (7) years of progressive responsibility in higher education or public-sector law.
- Exceptional oral, written, research, analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to advise senior University officials, exercise sound judgment, manage competing priorities, and address complex, multidisciplinary legal issues.
- Demonstrated ability to express ideas, opinions, and legal concepts clearly, effectively, and accurately, both orally and in writing to non-lawyers.
- Demonstrated understanding of the legal issues affecting higher education, including employment law, governance, student affairs, compliance, and federal higher education policy.
- High level of problem-solving skills, including the ability to work proactively and pragmatically.
- Strong organizational and leadership skills.
