Full Job Description
Game Artist (Generalist)

We are looking for a versatile Game Artist to join our team and help bring our game worlds, characters, props, and visual systems to life. This role is ideal for an artist who is comfortable moving between 2D and 3D workflows, can take rough ideas from concept to polished in-game assets, and enjoys collaborating closely with designers and developers in a small, fast-moving team environment.

As a Game Artist, you will contribute across the full art pipeline, from visual development and asset creation to engine integration, lighting, materials, VFX, and final polish. You should be comfortable solving visual problems independently, iterating quickly, and ensuring that your work supports both the artistic direction and gameplay experience.

Responsibilities
  • Translate rough concepts, references, and design ideas into finalized 2D and 3D game assets, including environments, characters, props, and supporting visual elements.
  • Model, texture, and optimize high- and low-poly assets for use in real-time game engines.
  • Create textures, materials, and shaders that support the game's visual style and technical requirements.
  • Import, organize, and set up assets, scenes, cameras, lighting, and materials in engines such as Unity or Unreal Engine.
  • Create visual polish elements, including particle effects, simple animations, material effects, and other VFX that improve gameplay clarity and presentation.
  • Collaborate with designers, engineers, animators, and other team members to ensure art assets support gameplay mechanics, readability, and performance budgets.
  • Iterate on assets based on feedback from stakeholders, playtests, and technical constraints.
  • Maintain clean, organized source files and follow established naming, versioning, and implementation standards.
  • Help define and maintain a consistent visual style across multiple asset types and game systems.

Qualifications
  • Broad generalist skillset across modeling, texturing, lighting, materials, and basic rigging or animation.
  • Strong proficiency with industry-standard art tools such as Photoshop and DCC software including Maya, Blender, ZBrush, Substance Painter, or equivalent tools.
  • Experience working with real-time game engines such as Unity or Unreal Engine.
  • Strong understanding of color theory, composition, lighting, form, silhouette, and visual readability.
  • Ability to create assets across a range of styles, from stylized to realistic, depending on project needs.
  • Portfolio demonstrating strong artistic fundamentals and a variety of completed 2D and/or 3D game art work.
  • Ability to work independently, solve visual and technical problems, and make progress with minimal oversight.
  • Strong communication skills and comfort working closely with design and engineering disciplines.
  • Understanding of optimization, asset budgets, and performance considerations for real-time games.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience creating VFX, particle systems, shaders, or procedural materials.
  • Familiarity with character art workflows, including rigging, skinning, or simple animation.
  • Experience with environment art, set dressing, lighting, and scene composition.
  • Understanding of version control tools and collaborative game development workflows.
  • Experience working on small teams, prototypes, indie games, or live production environments.
  • Basic scripting or blueprint/visual scripting knowledge in Unity or Unreal Engine.

What We're Looking For

We are looking for someone who is adaptable, self-directed, and excited to contribute wherever art support is needed. The ideal candidate is not limited to one narrow specialty; they are comfortable jumping between asset types, tools, and workflows to help the team move quickly while maintaining a high visual quality bar.

You should be able to take an idea from rough direction to an implemented, polished in-game result, while balancing creativity, performance, and gameplay clarity.

At SIE, we consider several factors when setting each role's base pay range, including the competitive benchmarking data for the market and geographic location.

Please note that the base pay range may vary in line with our hybrid working policy and individual base pay will be determined based on job-related factors which may include knowledge, skills, experience, and location.

In addition, this role is eligible for SIE's top-tier benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, matching 401(k), paid time off, wellness program and coveted employee discounts for Sony products. This role also may be eligible for a bonus package. Click here to learn more.
