Description

The Forensic Scientist 3-Supervisory DNA Analyst directs scientists using mitochondrial DNA sequencing (both Sanger and Next Generation Sequencing) and nuclear DNA typing (autosomal- & Y-STRs) methods in support of mission requirements.

***This is a 100% onsite position in Dover, DE

Critical Work Responsibilities include:
  • Responsible for a team of DNA Analysts or Technicians whose primary mission is to conduct DNA based typing services to identify the remains of American military personnel killed during previous U.S. military conflicts to include Southeast Asia, Korea, and World War II.
  • Supervision of scientific and technical staff personnel.
  • Perform special duties at the direction of the Technical Leader and Assistant Technical Leaders
  • Process biological specimens, to include stains, human blood, oral swabs, cadaveric tissues, teeth, and bone.
  • Generate, analyze, and interpret technical data, and produce technical reports.
  • Provide training in laboratory techniques and procedures to technical staff, students, and guests of the laboratory.


Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Master's degree in forensic science or a master's degree in one of the natural sciences with three years of experience in forensic science, or a B.A./B.S. degree in a biology-, chemistry-, or forensic science-related area with five years of relevant DNA experience.
  • Must have at least 9 cumulative semester hours or equivalent (graduate or undergraduate level) course work covering the following subject areas: biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology; and course work and/or training in statistics and/or population genetics as it applies to forensic DNA analysis.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a NAC-I Security clearance.

Work Environment:
  • Work is on site at the AFMES facility.
  • Understand that the possibility exists of exposure to noxious odors, hazardous chemicals, poisons, corrosive reagents, infectious tissues, x-ray, laser, and ultraviolet types of electromagnetic radiation.
  • Understands that travel may be required as a part of a DNA collection and/or sites of mass fatality incidents as required by the government.

Physical Demands:
  • Supervisor DNA Analyst should be able to:
    • Sit or stand at automated computer management systems, computers or laboratory stations for extended periods of time.
    • Operate automated and/or robotic instrumentation.
  • Perform laboratory house-keeping activities.
