Seeking a highly experienced Mechanical Engineer, P.Eng. who has a strong background in mechanical system design, codes and standards, failure analysis, damage assessment and product liability. Experience with HVAC, building mechanical, fire protection systems and heavy machinery is required. Experience as a technical expert in litigation actions is a strong asset for this role.

PRIMARY PURPOSE: To conduct incident investigations to determine the cause of failure or service interruption of mechanical systems and equipment. Provide clients with mechanical engineering consulting that include root cause analysis, repair and remediation options, risk assessments and corrective actions to prevent failures. You will provide expert level engineering consulting services to our clients in the insurance and legal sectors, government agencies, and private industry.

The ideal candidate will have forensic engineering experience determining causes of failures and damage assessments of mechanical systems and equipment. Your experience will include high-rise buildings, commercial and industrial facilities, and a broad range of machinery.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS And RESPONSIBILITIES

Receive assignments from clients for investigation of incident, assess needs and pursue investigation in accordance with the specific needs of the assignment.
Conduct inspections to determine the quality of mechanical system design, installation, function and maintenance.
Conduct investigations of failures, malfunction, defects or damages involving mechanical equipment to determine the origin and root cause of failure.
Determine the scope of damages and corresponding repair or replacement specifications.
Provide design specifications for repairs or replacement of mechanical systems.
Review legal documents, contracts, regulations, codes and standards to identify facts and key issues relevant to a given incident investigation.
Provide technical advice to clients on various issues involving insurance claims, legal actions, risk assessment and regulatory compliance.
Produce detailed engineering reports regarding failure analysis, cause of failures, extent of damages and specifications for repair and recommissioning of equipment.
Serve as an expert witness in court, depositions, mediations or other litigation support activities.
Collaborate with colleagues and liaise with other investigators as needed when leading or supporting investigations.
Collaborate with EFI Global international team of forensic experts to leverage knowledge and experience.
Use communications and social skills to develop professional relationships with clients and industry groups.
Attend marketing and sales activities, and social events.
Develop and provide presentations at seminars, webinars and industry conferences.
Develop and maintain positive relationships with clients, colleagues, subcontractors and prospects.

Continuous learning to maintain expert level knowledge in your technical discipline and understanding of new science, industry trends and emerging issues.
Prepare and publish technical articles.

Qualifications

Education & Licensing

Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized university and registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) within a province or territory in Canada.

Experience

Five (5)+ years of engineering experience or equivalent combination of experience and education required including experience in failure analysis and forensic engineering . Experience within insurance and/or risk management services industry is a strong asset.
Experience in HVAC systems, plumbing and piping, boilers and pressure vessels.
Experience with machinery and heavy equipment.
Experience conducting equipment damage assessments.
Experience working with insurance carriers, independent adjusters, law firms and business executives.
Expert witness testimony experience is a strong asset.
Skills & Abilities

Excellent oral and written communication skills.
PC literate, including Microsoft Office products and AutoCAD.
Comprehensive knowledge of industry codes and standards regarding mechanical systems and equipment.
Analytical and interpretive skills
Understanding of root cause analysis and scientific methodology
Strong project management and organizational skills
Good presentation skills.
A people-person committed to the highest standard of client satisfaction.
WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work in an office or remotely and at (indoor/outdoor) investigation sites, e.g. industrial, commercial, construction, and residential.
Travel up to 40% of the time. Travel is typically local but may include other provinces.
