Fixed Wireless Network Engineering Manager

JOB SUMMARY: This role is dedicated to collaborating with business partners to drive innovative applications of Fixed Wireless technology. The position involves leading a team responsible for ideating, architecting, engineering, provisioning, and managing the Fixed Wireless infrastructure at Southern Company. This infrastructure is critical to supporting essential business processes across various departments including Power Delivery, Metering, Technology, Generation, and GAS. Consequently, this Fixed Wireless environment demands high availability, resilience and security.

The network infrastructure managed by the department includes, but is not limited to, the following:
  • 35K+ GE Orbit Routers with associated provisioning / management tools
  • DMVPN configurations or other encryption technologies (FlexVPN)
  • Integration with P-LTE infrastructure (Southern Linc)


The Fixed Wireless Network Manager reports to the Manager of TO IS Specialized Infrastructure and is responsible for a team of approximately 5 Network Engineers primarily located in Atlanta and Birmingham.

    1. Manage the team with emphasis on effective planning, leadership, budgeting, cost management, communication and high-quality service delivery.
    2. Provide timely and effective 2nd and 3rd level support for all infrastructure components.
    3. Establish life-cycle planning and maintenance programs while ensuring support activities are aligned with TO practices.
    4. Collaborate with suppliers and vendors to drive lifecycle planning, product support, enhancements, and resolution of security vulnerabilities
    5. Seek opportunities to drive monitoring and automation opportunities that improve device management capabilities while reducing manual processes.
    6. Collaborate with TO team members, business partners and vendors to implement innovative solutions / processes that improve service delivery / support.
    7. Work with business partners, other TO organizations, and suppliers to develop and refine strategic business plans.
    8. Demonstrate ownership of the Strategic Plan for Fixed Wireless, define and execute a Fixed Wireless roadmap.
    9. Develop and maintain substantial knowledge of how business partners leverage this technology to fulfill their mission.
  3. Networking and Relationships -
    1. Establish and maintain mutually beneficial relationships / partnerships with TO team members, business partners, external vendors and industry SMEs (Utility and Telecom).


Minimum Requirements
  • Education -
    • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science or a related technical field desired.
    • Industry certifications consider positively.
  • Experience and knowledge -
    • Prior leadership experience preferred.
    • A minimum of five (5) years of experience, providing engineering and/or support for infrastructure technologies is required.
    • Experience in developing mutually beneficial relationships.
    • Knowledge of Fixed Wireless network industry trends, vendors, carriers, trade groups, etc.
    • Knowledge of network management systems, protocols, troubleshooting and restoration.
    • Knowledge of wireless, Ethernet, transport networks, IP routing and Layer 2/3 switching.
