JOB DESCRIPTION | FINANCIAL CONTROLLER
Job summary:
This position is responsible for the general ledger (GL) accounting function of the Finance and Administration department. Reporting to the CFO, the Financial Controller is responsible for preparing and recording asset, liability, revenue, and expenses entries as well as compiling and analyzing account information. In addition, the Financial Controller manages the Accounts Receivable cycle, subcontract payments and external filings for commodity taxes and workers compensation.
Key results areas:
- Accurate and timely processing of accounts receivable invoices and receipts
- Accurate and timely reconciliation of general ledger accounts and subsidiary Payroll, Job Cost and Accounts Receivable ledgers
- Ensuring accurate coding of entries in general ledger
- Accurate and timely submission of external remittances and filings
- Organized, logical and timely filing of accounting documentation
- Timely close of financial month end, and year end
- Raises accounting and finance issues with CFO in timely manner
General duties by function:
General Accounting
- Daily check for bank transactions and transfers funds between bank accounts
- Enters entries for bank transactions
- Creates and enters daily cash deposits
- Reports Weekly Deposit Summary to president/CFO
- Update Monthly analysis for Prepaid Insurance
- Prepares and enters recurring entries
- Prepares and enters payroll accruals if needed
- Enters General accruals if needed
- Prepares monthly WIP report
- Prepares and posts deferred revenue and WIP
- Prepares Monthly Financial Statements
- Reviews plausibility for changes on P&L
- Cost transfer for incorrectly recorded cost
- Files monthly GST and PST, and prepares remittances
- Assists with annual audit preparation as requested by CFO
- Other general accounting duties as required
- Records sales or purchase of assets
Project Accounting
- Sends Payment Notice for Project AR receipts
- Enters Job Cost AP accruals
- Monthly allocation of site IT and telecommunications costs to projects based on labour hours
- Entry of progress invoices
- Enters AR accruals if needed
- Job Cost transfer for incorrectly recorded cost
- Coordinates billing and collections workflow, including ensuring billings are complete and prepared in accordance with contract terms, and collections are timely.
- Coordinates substantial completion and holdback release and project financial close process
- Assists in the preparation of project cash flow forecasts
- Following up on budget forecast submission
- Reviews budget forecast
Administration
- Liaises with project team, vendors and other staff as required
- Admin Commercial Credit Card Program
- Wire Transfer and Bill Payment in RBC Express
- Documentation support for Estimators for bidding
- Upload or Release EFT Payment run if needed
We are looking for candidates who have:
- CPA preferred or in progress
- 5 years of working in the construction industry, or adjacent
- Experience in financial reporting and month-end/year-end close processes
- Strong technical accounting foundation (CPA preferred or in progress)
- Experience working in high-volume, fast-paced environments
- Ability to learn quickly and take ownership of new responsibilities
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Leadership potential and ability to grow into a Controller-level role
- Exposure to audits and internal controls.
