Description

The Office of Undergraduate Medical Education in the Cumming School of Medicine is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Finance & Business Analyst.

The Business Analyst, UME reports to the Senior Manager, UME with accountabilities to the Associate Dean, UME. This position works closely with Financial Services as well as other departmental managers within the Cumming School of Medicine (CSM).

This position provides a wide range of finance and analytic functions that support the strategic initiatives and educational mandate of the Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) office.

The position has comprehensive financial and budgetary responsibilities that require independent and sound judgement and decision-making abilities in a complex environment. There is a high volume of work requiring strong communication, leadership, facilitation and client services skills.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Financial and Business Operations:
  • Develops and implements the UME operational budget and monitors the activities
  • Evaluate business processes, anticipating requirements, uncovering areas for improvement, and developing and implementing solutions
  • Leading ongoing reviews of business processes and developing optimization strategies
  • Gathering critical information from meetings with various stakeholders and producing useful reports
  • Effectively communicating your insights and plans to cross-functional team members and management
  • Advises Associate Dean and Senior Manager, UME in financial matters pertaining to the UME
  • Ensures compliance with University of Calgary policies and procedures and adheres to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles

Leadership, Management:
  • Supports and mentors Financial Team and provides opportunities for career development and ongoing learning/education
  • Anticipates needs of Associate Dean and Senior Manager, UME to prepare and provide information for reporting to Senior CSM Executive and AHS Departmental Leadership
  • Collaborates with other CSM departments in the creation and implementation of projects and/or initiatives that provide operational improvements

Strategic Planning:
  • Communicates with Associate Dean and Manager, Senior UME to advise on financial resources and develop budget and analyze financial results
  • Develops departmental financial policies to respond to changing business environment for faculty, staff and students
  • Collaborates with UME Associate Dean and Senior Manager, UME of Fund Development and other external funders to create and implement financial awards relevant to UME students

Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Bachelors Degree in Accounting, Business or Finance is preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of management/leadership experience required
  • Experience leading operating budget and forecast processes in excess of $10M
  • Experience in providing direction and leadership to staff
  • Collaborative approach to working and leading in a team environment
  • Evidence of business and strategic planning, team building and staff supervision is required
  • Strong financial management, planning and resource allocation skills
  • Demonstrated financial analysis skills and understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and CRA regulations
  • Strong written and oral presentation skills
  • Working knowledge of computer systems including database and financial systems
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, faculty and students
  • High degree of initiative, judgment, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills
  • Ability to handle complex organizational, administrative and fiscal problems with a solid understanding of University structure and operations
