What you'll do

Giga Energy designs and manufactures switchboards, transformers, and modular data center power infrastructure for the AI and mission-critical data center market. We're building our field service function from the ground up to support commissioning, startup, and post-installation service for our transformer product line as it scales into utility, industrial, and hyperscale data center deployments.

As a Field Service Engineer - Transformers, you'll be the technical face of Giga Energy at customer sites - commissioning new units, troubleshooting in-service equipment, and building the field service playbook as one of our first dedicated transformer FSEs.
Where you'll work

This role is a a heavy travel position. This candidate must be open to 50-70% travel expectations.
  • Base salary + travel per diem, competitive with market (benchmarked against ABB/Siemens/Powell field service compensation bands)
  • On-call rotation for emergency customer support
  • Company vehicle or travel allowance, per diem, and standard field service equipment provided
Responsibilities
  • Perform on-site installation oversight, startup, and commissioning of power and distribution transformers (oil-filled and dry-type) at customer facilities
  • Conduct acceptance testing per IEEE/IEC/NEMA and customer specifications prior to energization
  • Support equipment energization planning, outage coordination, and site readiness reviews with customers, EPCs, and project managers
  • Interpret and work from single-line diagrams, winding/vector diagrams, control schematics, and equipment nameplate data
  • Perform Turns Ratio (TTR) testing, winding resistance, insulation resistance (IR/PI), power factor/dissipation factor, and SFRA testing
  • Conduct Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA) sampling and interpret oil analysis results to assess transformer health
  • Perform relay and protection testing where transformers interface with protective schemes
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot On-Load Tap Changer (OLTC/LTC) mechanisms, cooling systems, and control/monitoring equipment
  • Document all test results and produce clear, customer-ready technical reports
  • Execute troubleshooting, corrective maintenance, repair, and end-of-life/retrofit services on transformers in the field
  • Proactively identify potential equipment failures and recommend corrective or preventive actions to customers
  • Support warranty investigations, root cause analysis, and field failure reporting back to Engineering and Quality
  • Respond to emergency service calls, including after-hours and weekend support as required
  • Serve as the primary on-site technical representative for Giga Energy, building and maintaining strong customer relationships
  • Communicate job status, technical findings, and recommendations clearly to customers, contractors, and internal stakeholders
  • Prepare material lists, technical quotations, and scopes of work for follow-on service opportunities
  • Coordinate with site engineers, contractors, and internal Engineering/Quality teams during outages and installs
  • Comply fully with OSHA, NFPA 70E (arc flash/electrical safety), and Giga Energy EHS policies on every site visit
  • Maintain required certifications (e.g., NETA, OSHA 10/30, first aid/CPR) and complete ongoing safety training
  • Ensure all high-voltage work follows lockout/tagout (LOTO) and permit-to-work procedures
  • Maintain timely, accurate service reports, timesheets, expense reports, and job status updates
  • Feed field observations (failure modes, install issues, design feedback) into Giga's NCR/SCAR and continuous improvement processes
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or related field - OR equivalent experience (military electrical/electronics training, associate degree + relevant field experience)
  • 2+ years of hands-on field experience with power/distribution transformers, switchgear, or related power delivery equipment (entry-level candidates with strong internships/training programs will be considered)
  • Working knowledge of transformer testing: TTR, insulation resistance, DGA/oil analysis, power factor testing
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, and winding/vector diagrams
  • Willingness and ability to travel 50-75%, including domestic and potentially international sites
  • Valid driver's license; ability to maintain/obtain a passport
  • Physical ability to lift/move equipment components and work in industrial field environments (heights, confined spaces, outdoor conditions)
Bonus Points
  • Experience with OEM transformer platforms (ABB, Siemens, GE, Hitachi Energy, Powell, ERMCO) or equivalent
  • Familiarity with On-Load Tap Changers (OLTC), cooling systems (ONAN/ONAF/OFAF), and bushings
  • NETA certification or working toward NETA Level II/III
  • Experience with protective relay testing and interpretation
  • Data center or mission-critical facility experience
  • Prior experience at a transformer OEM, utility, or independent testing/service organization
