Role SummaryThe Field Application Engineer (FAE) is Cyntec's primary technical interface with automotive customer engineering teams. The role supports design-in, validation, launch, and production issue resolution for power electronics and passive components, while coordinating with Cyntec engineering and manufacturing teams in Asia.
Key Responsibilities- Lead technical discussions with customer electrical, mechanical, systems, validation, quality, and manufacturing engineers
- Translate customer specifications, schematics, operating conditions, and test results into clear requirements for Cyntec's global engineering teams
- Recommend and support the design-in of current-sense resistors, power inductors, chokes, transformers, and related power magnetic components
- Review component selection for electrical, thermal, mechanical, reliability, and manufacturability risks
- Plan and execute bench testing and failure analysis using oscilloscopes, power supplies, electronic loads, DAQ equipment, thermal measurement tools, and automotive communication interfaces
- Lead structured troubleshooting, containment, root-cause analysis, corrective action, 8D, and RMA activities; maintain clear technical records and customer updates
- Support customer validation, prototype builds, product launches, and on-site quality or application issues in Southeast Michigan and other North American locations
Minimum Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a closely related discipline, with at least five (5+) years of design, applications, validation, or product engineering experience
- Working knowledge of power electronics, including DC/DC converters, inverters, power distribution, filtering, and current sensing
- Practical understanding of passive component behavior and selection: resistance, inductance, impedance, saturation current, DCR, power rating, temperature rise, tolerance, frequency response, derating, and thermal resistance
- Ability to interpret schematics, PCB layouts, component specifications, automotive requirements, and electrical/thermal test data
- Hands-on lab capability with oscilloscopes, differential and current probes, power supplies, electronic loads, LCR meters, DAQ systems, thermal cameras or thermocouples, and CAN tools such as CANalyzer
- Ability to diagnose electrical, thermal, mechanical, and manufacturing-related failures and communicate evidence-based recommendations directly to customer engineers
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain component behavior, test results, tradeoffs, and corrective actions to both customer engineers and internal global teams
- Organized, methodical problem solver who can manage multiple programs, document decisions, and drive actions across time zones
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office; Excel data analysis or VBA capability is beneficial
- Ability to provide regular on-site support in the greater Detroit area and travel occasionally within North America and internationally
Preferred Qualifications- Experience with automotive development and quality processes such as APQP, PPAP, DFMEA/PFMEA, DV/PV testing, 8D, warranty analysis, and customer supplier portals is preferred
