Description
Fiber Engineer
Company: Gigapower LLC
Location: Charlotte, NC
Position Type: Permanent
Position Summary
The Fiber Engineer is responsible for the planning, design, and analysis of outside plant (OSP) fiber facilities and networks, including detailed review of high-level and low-level designs for feeder and distribution builds. This role produces construction-ready designs to support major fiber build projects, manages job costing and expenditure tracking, and may support construction budget coordination, project management, and right-of-way (ROW) functions. The ideal candidate evaluates multiple factors to develop practical, cost-effective engineering solutions, exercises sound judgment, and manages competing priorities and deadlines with minimal oversight.
Key Responsibilities
• Plan, design, and analyze outside plant (OSP) fiber networks, including feeder and distribution facilities, for major fiber build projects.
• Perform detailed review of High-Level Designs (HLD) and Low-Level Designs (LLD) to ensure constructability, accuracy, and alignment with project requirements.
• Produce detailed feeder and distribution engineering designs to support large-scale fiber deployment and expansion projects.
• Support OSP construction activities, including contractor oversight and field coordination, to ensure designs are executed as intended.
• Conduct job costing activities and monitor project expenditures to ensure costs remain within authorized levels.
• Investigate cost overruns and variances, and develop supplemental documentation and recommendations as needed.
• Coordinate construction budgets and support project management activities as assigned.
• Support and, when required, manage right-of-way (ROW) functions and related compliance activities.
• Evaluate multiple design, cost, and construction factors to develop creative, practical solutions to project challenges.
• Leverage AI-enabled tools and technology to improve design efficiency, reporting, cost analysis, and decision-making.
Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
• Experience in outside plant (OSP) fiber design, planning, and construction methodologies, including feeder and distribution network design.
• Demonstrated expertise in OSP Design, OSP Construction, OSP Planning, and contractor oversight.
• Working knowledge of outside plant build, installation, testing, and maintenance practices.
• Experience with job costing, budgeting, and financial tracking on construction or engineering projects.
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to evaluate multiple factors and develop practical engineering solutions.
• Ability to work independently, exercise discretion, and set work priorities to meet project and work deadlines.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and engineering/GIS design tools.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to use AI-assisted tools and technology to improve productivity, analysis, and decision-making.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with fiber network design/GIS platforms (e.g., ArcGIS, iQGeo, or similar OSP design software).
• Experience managing or supporting construction budgets and change order processes.
• Right-of-way (ROW) coordination or permitting experience.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license, or actively pursuing licensure.
• Experience with fiber testing and troubleshooting (e.g., OTDR).
