What You Will Do

Are you a talented and driven engineer looking to develop, maintain, and apply a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions? Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a skilled professional to join our Engineering Services (ES) Division as a Facility Electrical System Engineer 1 with the Engineering Services - Science and Technology Operations (ES-STO) group. As a vital member of the facilities engineering team you will contribute to the implementation of the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program at LANL in support of systems, structure and component modifications and new installations, and will support nuclear, accelerator or non-nuclear facilities across 38 square miles of the Laboratory. Engineer 1 ($96,600 - $158,000)
  • Learn from experienced electrical engineers and their in-depth knowledge of various construction methods and electrical systems
  • Follow the LANL Conduct of Engineering (CoE) Program in support of facility modifications and facility configuration management
  • Assess, maintain, and upgrade facility power distribution systems
  • Interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines and the customer(s) to establish design requirements, scope, schedule, and cost
  • Qualify as Electrical Safety Officer and support work planning, hazard control, and abnormal event responses and investigation


What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Ability to prepare calculations, apply engineering methods, and apply technology aided engineering tools to facility and operations-based engineering challenges
  • Basic knowledge of National Codes and Standards such as IBC, IEBC, IEEE, NEC, and NFPA
  • Knowledge and understanding of electrical engineering principles, design guides and relevant standards
  • Knowledge of engineering work planning, design change control and coordination
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
Education/Experience: Requires a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of two (2) years of practical experience to the degree necessary to perform the
responsibilities outlined above. Candidates that meet the degree requirement, but who do not meet the two-year experience requirement, are encouraged to apply and may be considered for hire through an allowable
variance.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Current registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) is highly desirable
  • Combined experience related to engineering, calculations, and design of facility electrical systems, structures and components such as switchgear, switchboards, MCCs, motor starters / VFDs, Small UPS, panelboards, feeders, branch circuits, and short circuit analysis
  • Demonstrated knowledge of DOE standards applicable to electrical design implementation Experience with SKM Power tools Software or similar electrical system analysis software


Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
