Full Job Description
Overview

Department 706 provides life cycle support services to TRF Kings Bay for OHIO and COLUMBIA class submarines. Primarily focused on facilities management, engineering services, and project management of key infrastructure projects onboard TRFKB which support the existing maintenance mission as well as preparing for the arrival of COLUMBIA. Department 706 at TRFKB is a small but growing team with a startup mentality. Well poised to support a variety of contracts, the team is growing its footprint and influence daily. Providing 5-star service in support of the strategic deterrence mission is our daily goal.

Department 706 is growing a multi-discipline group comprised of mechanical, structural, civil, nuclear, and electrical engineers who will also act as subject matter experts on key COLUMBIA systems. D706 Engineering operates in a collaborative, dynamic, team-oriented manner. Using a design-build approach, D706 interfaces with Operations, Design, Planning Yard, Test, and Program Office personnel to arrive at innovative solutions to difficult problems. Additionally, interaction with the United States Navy customer is typical, including the Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Naval Sea Systems Command, and submarine crews.

Tasking will also include the development of support equipment for current and future classes of submarines. These tasks will include oversight, calculations, drawing development, collaborative interface with the various customers, as well as working with vendors up to and including manufacturing

Tasks required of the D706 engineer include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Development of Selected Record Drawings for all submarine alterations.
  • Interpretation and translation of shipbuilding specifications, maintenance requirements, and contractual requirements.
  • Deck-plate support and resolution of emergent issues.
  • Development of technical rationale to support approval of nonconforming conditions.
  • Collaboration with engineers of other disciplines, including mechanical and civil.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical or Structural Engineering or equivalent technical degree.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in the degreed subject post graduation.
  • Active DoD secret or Top Secret security clearanceor capability to obtain one.

Preferred:

  • Prior experience related to USN ship maintenance and/or modernization.
  • Prior experience with commercial and military welding standards.
Skills
  • A strong foundational understanding of engineering concepts.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • An aptitude for problem resolution and facing new challenges.
  • The ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • A capability to work against deadlines or prioritize work assignments accordingly.
  • Candidates must be willing and physically able to climb steep stairs and ladders, ascend/descend scaffolding, and access confined spaces within a submarine.
