Discipline Description

Fire protection engineers develop and implement fire protection programs and procedures to maintain fire protection and life safety systems. They implement programs and procedures to ensure employee and facility safety is in accordance with codes and standards including DOE standards, ICC codes and NFPA Code and Standard requirements. They conduct Fire Hazard Analysis and develop Fire Scenario Documentation for nuclear and non-nuclear facilities to prevent fire and determine controls that protect personnel, facilities, and the environment from the effects of a fire. Fire protection engineers maintain current knowledge of building and fire protection codes and regulations to assure compliance, survey facilities to determine potential fire hazards and recommend corrective action. They review and approve the more complex documents required for new construction or modification of existing facilities to determine appropriate fire prevention. They specify and monitor inspection, testing and maintenance of fire protection systems and equipment to ensure that in an emergency they operate and perform to applicable codes and standards, and participates in the investigation of all facets of any fire to determine the origin, cause, and what, if any, breakdown in the fire protection plans and procedures may have occurred.
