Full Job Description
We're looking for an Executive Underwriter, US Energy

Reporting to the SVP Underwriter, US Energy, the successful candidate will work collaboratively and play an important role from an underwriting perspective as Hamilton builds and grows its platform serving the energy sector in an excess capacity.

The candidate will share responsibility for the solicitation, underwriting, relationship management, and growth of Hamilton's excess energy business serving both the retail and wholesale insurance marketplace. The candidate will also help ensure that the business underwritten is consistent with a risk management framework that is appropriate to the nature and scale of Hamilton's business. This position can be remote or based in one of our offices located in Richmond, Virginia or Miami and going into the office on a hybrid basis.

What you will do

Underwriting

  • Originate and service new and renewal business from wholesale and retail distribution channels
  • Underwrite and place business in line with Hamilton's preferred portfolio strategy while adhering to underwriting guidelines and file documentation standards
  • Provide input to support the continuous improvement of underwriting practices and utilization of metrics to evaluate individual deals relative to the portfolio
  • Provide input to the strategy for the US Energy department and contribute to the business planning process
  • Ensure the business reflects good industry practice while always championing the Hamilton brand and culture


Marketing and Relationship

  • Collaboratively develop a strategy for business development activity to support the delivery of strategic goals of the US Energy department
  • Seek opportunities to cross-sell and promote other Hamilton products and distribution
  • Continually evaluate and adjust where needed on the Hamilton value proposition


Other Responsibilities

  • Act as a role model, by promoting the Hamilton brand and culture
  • Work within a framework to manage expenses within agreed budgets


What you require for the role

  • Experienced energy underwriter, familiar with all aspects of energy underwriting such as policy structures, contractual wording, loss selection methodologies, financial analysis (risk pricing and selection), and ongoing account oversight and management
  • An understanding of all aspects of managing a book of business and underwriting - thus writing the appropriate risks at the right price
  • Have a strong network of retail and wholesale brokerage contacts, particularly in the western United States
  • Ability to adapt to new technologies and market conditions
  • Self-starter, capable of both working independently and as part of a team
  • Collaborative, with superb negotiation skills
