Job Description Summary
Reporting to the Associate Provost for Academic Planning, the Executive Director of Extended Studies provides visionary, entrepreneurial, and operational leadership for a significant $88M portfolio of revenue-generating credit and non-credit academic programs serving pre-college, undergraduate, graduate, and professional learners. The Executive Director will shape and implement a comprehensive strategy to expand access, drive sustainable growth, and position Extended Studies as a catalyst for innovation and impact. By cultivating strategic partnerships and championing entrepreneurial thinking, the Executive Director plays a central role in advancing institutional priorities by extending the University of Maryland’s reach locally, nationally, and globally.

Physical Demands: Standard office environment with the expectation of regular engagement across campus and with external partners. Evening work or occasional travel may be required to support meetings, events, partnerships, and other strategic activities.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or University.

Experience: Twelve (12) years of professional experience, including at least six (6) years supervising or managing professional staff.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and inspire stakeholders at all levels.

Ability to make sound decisions, solve complex problems, and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Knowledge of relevant industry regulations and best practices.

Preferences:

  • Demonstrated record of success in program development, strategic growth, enrollment expansion, revenue generation, budget oversight, and leadership of complex cross-functional teams.
  • Advanced degree in education, public administration, business administration, higher education, or a related field.
  • Leadership experience in professional and continuing education, online education, workforce development, or related areas within higher education.
  • Knowledge of higher education strategy, professional and continuing education markets, workforce trends, and the needs of adult and nontraditional learners.
  • Demonstrated financial and operational acumen, including budgeting, performance management, resource allocation, and organizational planning.
  • Ability to think strategically, articulate a compelling vision, build productive partnerships, and lead organizational change.
  • Experience within a large public research university.
  • Familiarity with University of Maryland systems, policies, governance, and institutional structure.
  • Record of innovation in lifelong learning, academic strategy, or entrepreneurial educational initiatives.
