Job Description:

The Estimator II develops and manages accurate, competitive bids for earthwork and site development projects, including mass grading, excavation, haul operations, site preparation, and related civil construction work. This role takes ownership of estimates from initial plan review through bid submission and serves as a key partner to project managers and operations teams throughout the preconstruction process.

The Estimator II reviews plans and specifications, performs site visits, completes quantity takeoffs, develops scopes, evaluates production rates, gathers subcontractor and supplier pricing, and builds comprehensive estimates within HeavyBid. The role applies field knowledge, construction means and methods, and risk evaluation to develop pricing strategies that support successful project execution. The Estimator II independently manages assigned bids from opportunity review through submission, coordinating project managers, superintendents, operations leaders, subcontractors, and suppliers throughout the process. This role evaluates project risks, develops pricing strategies, validates production assumptions, and provides recommendations that directly influence bid competitiveness and project profitability.

Success in this position requires strong technical estimating skills, sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple bids and priorities with limited oversight. The Estimator II plays an active role in project handoff and operational planning and serves as a critical link between preconstruction and field operations. This role represents an experienced estimating position and provides a pathway toward senior estimating and project management responsibilities within Veit.

A Day in the Life
  • Reviews plans and specifications to determine the scope of the work required for the project.
  • Reviews jobsites before bidding to make appropriate estimates.
  • Completes an accurate earthwork takeoff utilizing AGTEK software and perform hand takeoff quantities for various aspects of each project.
  • Calculates quantities (square yard, linear feet, cubic yard, each, etc.) for each project to factor materials needed and material movement.
  • Solicits quotes from subcontractors for bid preparation and final numbers. Keeps DBE/MBE requirements in mind with subcontractor invitations to bid.
  • Collects quotes on materials required for the project.
  • Constructs the bid by adding activities (work to be completed), crews and equipment, adjusting production rates.
  • Prints out bid proposals to create proposal. Sends/delivers to owner or general contractor of each bid in the time frame required.
  • Determines results of bids by contacting General Contractors or communication from the bid runner for publicly awarded jobs.
  • Works with Project Manager, managing the project, after the job is awarded.
  • Other duties or tasks as assigned by Management.


What You'll Need
  • Bachelor's degree (B.A.) in Construction Management or Civil Engineering from four-year college or university; or minimum of 3-5 years' experience bidding and estimating projects; or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Construction Bidding and Project Management software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to work with all levels of management, employees, external vendors, and other business associates. Must clearly communicate directions and information.
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, clients, and/or regulatory agencies.
  • Ability to define problems, collect and document data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of situations and events and respond accordingly. Ability to seek counsel, when needed and use a variety of resources.
  • Ability to maintain compliance with all Veit policies and procedures.

Work Environment

Most often an office environment, however jobsite travel is required. Employee frequently works alone and with others. Frequently exposed to variable work environments, including unique conditions outside a typical office environment. Occasionally exposed to moving machinery, odors, dust, pressurized equipment. Occasionally exposed to electrical hazards. May be exposed to environmental conditions, loud noises, and variable weather including rain, snow, wind, cold, and heat.

Additional Job Description:

Base Compensation: $75,000 - $100,000

The base salary range may vary depending on geographic location, applicant skills, and prior relevant experience.
