The EPG Field Service Class B Technician works with limited supervision to diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, maintain, test, and commission Caterpillar Electric Power Generation equipment at customer locations. This position supports customer power generation needs through preventative maintenance, emergency repairs, load bank testing, equipment startups, and electrical/mechanical diagnostics while delivering exceptional customer service.
Pay Rate: $32.00-$52.60 per hour.
Pay Rate is based upon experience and education.Essential Functions - Diagnose and repair Caterpillar diesel and natural gas generator sets, including engine, fuel, cooling, lubrication, air intake, exhaust, starting, charging, and aftertreatment systems.
- Troubleshoot alternators, excitation systems, voltage regulators, circuit breakers, batteries, battery chargers, jacket-water heaters, control wiring, sensors, and protective devices.
- Diagnose Caterpillar generator controls and related components, including EMCP and GCCP control panels, remote annunciation, communications, and customer interface signals, within assigned training and authorization.
- Inspect, test, and troubleshoot automatic transfer switches, switchgear, and basic paralleling-system functions. Coordinate advanced controls or system-level issues with senior technicians, engineering, or product support.
- Perform preventive maintenance, condition inspections, operational checks, and scheduled service in accordance with the work order, Caterpillar service information, and dealer procedures.
- Complete generator-set startups, commissioning checks, load-bank tests, transfer tests, and performance tests. Record readings, identify deficiencies, and confirm corrective actions before returning equipment to service.
- Use electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, sequence-of-operation documents, specifications, and Caterpillar service information to plan and complete work.
- Use Cat Electronic Technician, Cat service information systems, digital multimeters, insulation testers, clamp meters, pressure gauges, temperature instruments, and other approved test equipment.
- Safely isolate energy sources and verify absence of voltage before work. Perform energized testing only when necessary, authorized, and completed under the applicable electrical safe-work practices.
- Respond to customer outages and emergency service calls. Evaluate equipment condition, restore operation when safe, and clearly communicate temporary conditions or remaining risks.
- Prepare complete and accurate service reports that document the complaint, cause, correction, test results, parts used, labor, equipment condition, and follow-up recommendations.
- Communicate job status, repair options, additional work needs, and equipment readiness to the customer and the service department throughout the assignment.
- Maintain the assigned service vehicle, tools, test equipment, parts inventory, technical information, and required personal protective equipment in serviceable condition.
- Work with Service, Parts, Product Support, Engineering, and Sales personnel to resolve technical issues and support customer requirements.
- Participate in Caterpillar and dealer technical training and apply current service procedures to field assignments
- Perform other duties assigned by the manager that are consistent with the position's training and qualifications.
Required Education and Experience - High School Diploma or GED.
- 3+ years of experience servicing CAT generators or power generation equipment.
- 3+ years of experience troubleshooting diesel engines, electrical systems, or generator controls.
- 3+ years customer service experience.
Preferred Education and Experience - Technical School Certificate or Associate Degree in Diesel Technology, Electrical Technology, Power Generation, or related field.
- CAT EPG training certifications.
- Experience with ATS systems, switchgear, and paralleling controls.
- Experience performing load bank testing and generator commissioning.
- Experience with CAT Digital and Remote Monitoring solutions.
Physical Demands & Competencies - Standing, walking, talking, sitting, use of hands, and hearing.
- Ability to ascend and descend ladders, stairs, and access equipment in various work environments.
- Heavy work that includes lifting and/or moving objects up to 100 pounds or more.
- Strong electrical and mechanical troubleshooting skills with the ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and technical manuals.
- Customer service, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision and utilize CAT diagnostic software (ET, SIS, SIS Web).
