The Environment Manager leads environmental regulatory compliance and plant-level best practices at the Pasco, WA facility through implementation of the Darigold Environmental Management System (EMS). This role reports to the Senior Site Director, with a dotted-line relationship with the Senior Director, Environmental Compliance, and the Senior Director, Health and Safety.
This position is accountable for coordinating and executing environmental programs to meet regulatory requirements and company policies. This position will also focus on the Pasco plant health and safety, ensuring that OSHA and company requirements are well managed, audited, and continually improved. This effort will involve a positive working relationship with the plant management and especially the plant Health and Safety Manager.
- Environmental core responsibilities include wastewater and stormwater compliance, waste management, greenhouse gas emissions programs, and operational disruptions as needed.
- Health and safety core responsibilities include responding to accidents and incidents, hazard assessment and documentation, training personnel and supervision in LNI requirements, and safety program development.
What you will do (other duties may be assigned by the Senior Site Director.) Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local requirements governing environmental protection and Safety by staying current and informed on federal, state, and local rules and regulations.
- Interfaces with regulatory agencies and plant staff as needed and required by the Senior Site Director.
- Monitor environmental compliance data and ensure timely internal and external reporting and data input into Darigold's environmental management systems. Advise Senior Site Director and Corporate Senior Director of Environmental Compliance when permit or compliance issues develop.
- Respond and provide guidance and assistance to all emergency situations.
- Implement all aspects of environmental investigations, data analysis,
recurrence-prevention programs and continuous improvement procedures. - Directly support the delivery of all environmental and safety training for all levels of employees.
- Other environmental and safety compliance duties as assigned by the Senior Site Director, Senior Director, Environmental Compliance, and the Senior Director, Health and Safety.
Specific experience required: (The requirements listed below are representative of the qualities needed for the position, but are not intended to be all-inclusive.)
Industry safety experience in WA state
Stormwater:Stormwater management permit compliance in Washington State (sampling, reporting, corrective actions, BMPs, treatment/impounding/infiltration, annual reports, and regulatory agency interfacing).
Wastewater:Wastewater discharge permit compliance in Washington State (understanding permit terms and conditions, concentration/mass-based limits, generating DMRs, compliance incident investigations, spill response, and regulatory agency interfacing).
Waste management:Waste disposal compliance in Washington State (universal and hazardous waste disposal regulations including generator storage limits, labeling, manifesting, disposal site assessments, employee training, recording keeping.)
Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions:
Collect data to support annual GHG reporting and sustainability reporting requirements as well as Climate Commitment Act compliance in Washington State (baseline emissions, data validation processes and reporting, intensity calculations, emission allowances, purchased emission credits, WA State auction processes and procedures).
What you will bring:- Professional communication skills and the ability to respond effectively to environmental compliance inquiries and/or complaints are of critical importance. Also, must be able to clearly communicate under pressure. Team leadership skills are critical.
- Analyze data, write, and submit reports. Must be able to maintain environmental compliance systems and utilize data to drive continuous improvement.
- Develop and deliver presentations on compliance topics to plant management, plant staff, and public groups when requested by the Senior Site Director. Communicate technical and complex environmental protection concepts. A person in this position must be able to conduct technical training and engage employees in an effective learning experience.
- Pursue and productively participate in continuing technical education as deemed necessary by the Senior Site Director.
Education, Experience, and Certifications- Bachelor's degree required, preferably in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Environmental Management, or a related field. A combination of an associate degree and directly related environmental compliance experience may be considered. Other technical degrees and/or experience combinations may also be considered.
- Certification as a train-the-trainer in aerial lift, PIT, and fall protection is preferred
- Have or be eligible for safety certification as a CSP or CIH preferred
- Recent OSHA 511 coursework preferred
- 5 to 7 years of directly related experience in environmental compliance in the dairy foods processing industry is preferred but not required.
