Examples of Duties The duties listed below are not all that may be assigned, but are considered essential for an employee to perform.
- Perform site inspections for Improvement, Authorization to Construct, Operation, Repair, and Verification permits within the Onsite Wastewater Program. To issue these permits a number of activities must be performed on the site including but not limited to auger borings 4 to 5 ft, digging pits, soil evaluation, laying out drainfields and taking measurements to lock in the site plan and maintain appropriate setbacks, locationg existing septic systems with a hand probe, measuring elevation and land contour differences with a laser transit. Also, meeting on communicating with owners, buyers, general contractors, setpic contractors, and builders
- Perform site inspections for well construction permits, well grout inspections, well head inspections, and well sampling within the well program. Site inspections require identifying and measuring setbacks on the property or neighboring properties that would affect the placement of a well on the lot, meeting with well drillers to observe well grouts, confirming proper well head construction, and pulling water samples using proper methods to ensure accurate results. Also, meeting and communicating with owners, buyers, general contractors, well drillers, and builders.
- Provide second opinions for difficult sites to fellow employees. Perform QA/QC of well and septic permits issued by fellow employees.
- Carry out Performance Management roles and responsibilities, including identifying and communicating performance improvement opportunities and adjusting performance and practice to achieve established PM goals.
- Maintain proper REHS annual continuing education credits by taking or attending online or in-person classes/conferences.
- Assist in various emergency preparedness activities, such as H1N1, bioterrorism events, or other disease outbreaks. The amount of time worked on preparedness activities will vary based on the duration of the incident. Regular job duties will be assigned to other staff as needed. Some job duties may not be accomplished.
Minimum Qualifications - Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university. Have at least 30 semester physical, biological, natural, life, or health science hours.
- NC REHS and four years of experience in onsite wastewater. Ability to handle difficult situations in the field, problem solve, and remain calm in tense interactions.
- Registered Environmental Health Specialist with the NC State Board of Environmental Health Specialist Examiners and have a valid driver's License. Authorized in onsite wastewater.
Additional Information The applicant selected must undergo and pass a drug screening test prior to employment.
