Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist ensures the site maintains safe, hazard-free workplaces while complying with federal, state, and local regulations. The EHS Specialist strives to protect workers, communities, and the environment by reducing risks, enforcing safety protocols, and managing environmental impacts.

What You Will Do:
  • Supports and promotes safe practices in alignment with company commitments, policies, and compliance requirements.
  • Acts as an OSHA, EPA and SCDES regulatory compliance resource.
  • Acts as a technical resource and/or lead on specialized EHS topics. Examples include such topics as chemical and noise exposure, machine guarding, ergonomics, lockout/tagout, material handling, powered industrial trucks and hazardous materials transportation (DOT). Scope of technical expertise and/or lead status as determined by EHS manager.
  • Leads or participates in incident investigations (injury, property damage, near-miss, environmental deviations, etc.) and root cause analysis and works with the plant operations team to determine appropriate corrective/preventative actions.
  • Evaluates Job Hazard assessments (JHA) to determine employee risk/exposure and suggest/drive actions to mitigate/reduce them.
  • Assist the plant operations team to evaluate and determine appropriate proactive EHS strategies for projects that may have an impact on the facility or employees.
  • Develop and Lead EHS Safety Stand Downs and work with operations to determine corrective actions and drives closure to actions.
  • Participate in the EHS Management Committee meetings, perform follow-up on actions and reports status at next month's meeting.
  • Develop and Deliver safety, health and environmental training for all plant personnel thru in-person, Workday and on-the-job training (Weekly Safety Topics).
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality including confidential information, including product, process, financial and legal compliance.
  • Proven leadership experience with the ability to work within diverse and challenging situations to achieve results in a straightforward and composed manner.
  • Compile and track all documentation for compliance with all safety and environmental policies and required activities (Workers Compensation, OSHA 300 and OSHA logs, SQG Hazardous Waste CAA and SAA inspections, etc.).
  • Support plant initiatives towards CORE, Cost Reduction, 5S and other facility improvements.
  • Conduct routine facility inspections, review job tasks, and evaluate production areas for physical, chemical, and biological hazards.
  • Assist in driving continuous improvement in the facilities environmental monitoring and recordkeeping data management systems on Stormwater, Air Permit and Hazardous Waste compliance with all RTX/Collins policies and federal, state, and local regulatory requirements
  • Coordinates and ensures that compliance is maintained to all industrial hygiene (IH) requirements (personal exposure and noise), lead IH sampling thru 3rd party vendor, updates Quantitative and Qualitative documents as needed.
  • Ensure the proper onsite management and offsite disposal of solid, universal, and hazardous wastes and lead a plant-wide effort to eliminate, reduce, reuse, and recycle various materials
  • Ensure compliance with all safety and environmental policies, procedures, and programs.


Qualifications You Must Have:
  • Typically requires a University Degree or equivalent experience and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience, or An Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years experience
  • Three or more years of experience in a safety and/or environmental role in an industrial setting.
  • Must meet one or both of the following criteria:
    1. Has served as the EHS Specialist for a minimum of three years.
    2. Is recognized by current company as a Subject Matter Expert in a specific EHS discipline (e.g. Industrial Hygiene, Job Hazard Analysis, Laser Safety, Stormwater, Emergency Response, etc.) and is called upon to share his/her expertise with other locations within the Company.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of federal and state safety and environmental laws and programs (e.g. OSHA, EPA, SCDES, etc.).


Qualifications We Prefer:
  • Bachelor's degree in safety and health, environmental or equivalent degree.
  • Prior Safety Specific Training (OSHA 30 Hour, Certificate in Occupational Safety & Health, etc.)
  • Five or more years of experience in a safety and/or environmental role in an industrial setting.
  • Ability to work with respective outside agencies and contracted employees.
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook). Ability to use a variety of software applications to analyze, monitor data, create reports, and presentations.
  • Excellent communication, training and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated Root-Cause analysis skills (RCCA, 5-Whys).
  • Leadership skills to direct personnel, implement initiatives, supervising teams, and performing follow-up activities.
  • Analytical ability to assess complex situations and apply problem solving strategies.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Comfortable working in a plant environment.
  • Ability to be on call, as needed 24/7.

The salary range for this role is 86,800 USD - 165,200 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.

Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company's performance.

This role is a U.S.-based role. If the successful candidate resides in a U.S. territory, the appropriate pay structure and benefits will apply.
