Full Job Description
The Notifications Platform (also known as Foundation) Team builds the durable infrastructure and services that power Reddit's push, email, and in-app notifications. We provide the APIs, eventing, delivery orchestration, preferences, templates, experimentation hooks, observability, and reliability foundations that enable product teams to reach Redditors with timely, trusted communications at scale.

We are looking for an Engineering Manager to lead our Notifications Platform team, shaping the systems that power the future of Notifications at Reddit. In this role, you will lead a team of software engineers responsible for building reliable, scalable platform capabilities used by notification experiences across Reddit. This is a high-impact team that enables product velocity, improves notification quality and reliability, and helps Reddit connect people to the communities and conversations they care about.

If building resilient, high-scale distributed systems that make Reddit Notifications dependable and easy to evolve excites you, then you've found the right place.

What You'll Do
  • Lead the team that architects, builds, and operates the Notifications Platform/Foundations at Reddit.
  • Set technical direction for shared platform capabilities spanning notification APIs, eventing and workflow orchestration, delivery pipelines, user preferences, templates, experimentation, and observability.
  • Collaborate closely with adjacent Notifications ML teams to build and productionize ML-powered notification systems, providing the scalable platform and operational foundations they need.
  • Partner with product and engineering teams to define clear platform contracts, improve developer experience, and enable teams to launch notification experiences safely and efficiently.
  • Drive the full development lifecycle: design, develop, test, deploy, operate, and continuously improve highly available services.
  • Establish strong practices for reliability, scalability, performance, privacy, security, and operational excellence across the platform.
  • Build and maintain a diverse team that can collaborate across disciplines to find technical solutions to complex challenges.
  • Serve as a thought partner to product and upper management to ensure your team's plans align with company goals.
  • Communicate your team's work and set expectations with cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Help your engineers identify career goals and create development plans to achieve them.

You Have:
  • 2+ years of experience building and managing engineering teams.
  • 5+ years of experience as a Software Engineer or Engineering Manager building and operating large-scale distributed systems or platform services.
  • Deep understanding of distributed systems, service-oriented architectures, event-driven systems, and APIs in production; experience with notification, messaging, communications, or other high-volume delivery systems is a plus.
  • Hands-on experience with highly available, low-latency services and operational excellence practices.
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure, data storage, streaming or messaging systems, and observability tooling.
  • Experience setting technical direction for platform teams and balancing consistency, extensibility, and team autonomy.
  • Entrepreneurial and self-directed, innovative, results-oriented, biased towards action in fast-paced environments.
  • Able to communicate and discuss complex topics with technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Able to tackle ambiguous and undefined problems.

Benefits:
  • Comprehensive Healthcare Benefits and Income Replacement Programs
  • 401k with Employer Match
  • Global Benefit programs that fit your lifestyle, from workspace to professional development to caregiving support
  • Family Planning Support
  • Gender-Affirming Care
  • Mental Health & Coaching Benefits
  • Flexible Vacation & Paid Volunteer Time Off
  • Generous Paid Parental Leave

About Reddit

Reddit is an American social news aggregation, web content rating, and discussion website. Registered members submit content to the site such as links, text posts, images, and videos, which are then voted up or down by other members. Posts are organized by subject into user-created boards called "communities" or "subreddits", which cover topics such as news, politics, religion, science, movies, video games, music, books, sports, fitness, cooking, pets, and image-sharing. Submissions with more upvotes appear towards the top of their subreddit and, if they receive enough upvotes, ultimately on the site's front page. Although there are strict rules prohibiting harassment, it still occurs, and Reddit administrators moderate the communities and close or restrict them on occasion. Moderation is also conducted by community-specific moderators, who are not considered Reddit employees. As of September 2021, Reddit ranks as the 19th-most-visited website in the world and 7th most-visited website in the U.S., according to Alexa Internet. About 42–49.3% of its user base comes from the United States, followed by the United Kingdom at 7.9–8.2% and Canada at 5.2–7.8%. Twenty-two percent of U.S. adults aged 18 to 29 years, and 14 percent of U.S. adults aged 30 to 49 years, regularly use Reddit. Reddit was founded by University of Virginia roommates Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian, with Aaron Swartz, in 2005. Condé Nast Publications acquired the site in October 2006. In 2011, Reddit became an independent subsidiary of Condé Nast's parent company, Advance Publications. In October 2014, Reddit raised $50 million in a funding round led by Sam Altman and including investors Marc Andreessen, Peter Thiel, Ron Conway, Snoop Dogg, and Jared Leto. Their investment valued the company at $500 million then. In July 2017, Reddit raised $200 million for a $1.8 billion valuation, with Advance Publications remaining the majority stakeholder. In February 2019, a $300 million funding round led by Tencent brought the company's valuation to $3 billion. In August 2021, a $700 million funding round led by Fidelity Investments raised that valuation to over $10 billion.
