Full Job Description
About the role

Checkr's Mortgage Verifications team builds the systems lenders use to verify income and employment for millions of mortgage applicants a year - work that sits at the intersection of consumer data, regulated financial decisions, and ML/AI-driven automation. We're mid-flight on a major evolution of our verification products, and next-generation prediction models for verification outcomes.

As Engineering Manager, you'll lead a team of ~8 engineers building this platform end-to-end - from the APIs and Integrations core to the platform, to the AI/ML models that power verification decisions to the customer-facing product experience. You'll report into Mortgage engineering leadership with direct visibility to the executive leadership team, and you'll partner closely with the product team to shape what ships next. The decisions this team makes affect real people's ability to get a mortgage - the stakes and the scale are real, and so is the room to make an impact fast.

What you'll do
  • Own delivery and technical direction for the Mortgage Verifications team as we scale our self-serve verification product through its next launch phases
  • Drive team-level AI adoption - not just personal tool use, but rollout with real guardrails, baselines, and a measured effect on how the team ships
  • Co-own product direction with your PM partner: shape the problem, create alignment where warranted, and don't just execute a handed-off spec
  • Lead the team through platform modernization while shipping new features in a highly regulated, high-stakes domain
  • Manage production incidents as both technical lead and communication lead, in a system where downtime has real business and consumer impact
  • Grow your engineers' careers - including building the case for promotions and identifying where each person wants to go next
  • Hire senior and staff-level engineering talent to grow the team through its next phase
  • Represent the team's priorities and progress to product and executive stakeholders, with the data and methodology to back up any impact claim you make
What you bring
  • 4+ years as an engineering manager; 8+ years as an engineer
  • A concrete track record of rolling out AI adoption across a team - with guardrails and a baseline you measured against, not just "I use Copilot";
  • Quantitative fluency: you can explain not just the metric behind a business-impact claim you've made, but the methodology and baseline behind it
  • A demonstrated pattern of co-owning product direction - shaping problems and disagreeing productively with Product - rather than taking specs and executing
  • Experience managing incidents in production systems at scale, as both technical lead and communicator
  • Experience working on regulated, high-stakes products where data accuracy and compliance matter (fintech, healthcare, identity, or similar) - comfort with ambiguity matters more here than process maturity from a large, established org
  • Strong system design and architecture judgment; comfortable making prioritization calls with incomplete information
  • A track record of growing engineers and building inclusive, high-functioning teams
  • Openness to feedback and genuine curiosity - you'll be learning alongside a team that's evolving fast
  • An A-player mindset with a strong bias for action: you raise the bar, move with urgency, stay resilient through ambiguity, and take ownership to deliver meaningful outcomes.
