Position Title: Engineering Drawing Control Specialist

Location: Irvine, CA

Work Arrangement: On-site

Position Summary

The Engineering Drawing Control Specialist is responsible for ensuring the integrity, consistency, and compliance of all engineering drawings and CAD models prior to release. This role serves as the governing authority for drawing format, revision control, modeling methodology, and assembly structure standards across the organization.

The position establishes and enforces company-wide CAD modeling standards, drawing conventions, revision schemes, and configuration control practices. This individual ensures that released documentation meets internal standards, contractual requirements, regulatory requirements (if applicable), and best industry practices.

This role operates as an independent quality gate within the engineering release process.

Required Duties and Responsibilities:

Drawing Review & Release Control
  • Review all engineering drawings prior to release for:
  • Correct formatting and title block completion
  • Appropriate drawing titles and descriptions
  • Correct notes, callouts, and references
  • Proper revision schemes and revision history documentation
  • Accurate distribution statements and classification markings (if applicable)
  • Compliance with company and contractual standards
  • Verify drawing-to-model alignment and ensure 3D/2D consistency
  • Confirm BOM accuracy and proper part numbering structure
  • Ensure traceability of changes through formal revision control processes
  • Serve as release authority for production-ready drawings

CAD Standards Development & Enforcement
  • Develop and maintain company-wide CAD modeling standards
  • Define best practices for:
  • Assembly structure hierarchy
  • Part naming conventions
  • File management and vault organization
  • Parameterization and design intent capture
  • Configuration and variant management
  • Establish drawing templates and standard note libraries
  • Maintain and publish CAD standards documentation
  • Conduct periodic audits to ensure compliance
  • Create and verify COTS and library parts
  • Maintain engineering library

Configuration Management
  • Assist configuration management team
  • Ensure proper versioning and lifecycle states within PDM/PLM systems on document release
  • Coordinate with engineering and manufacturing to ensure proper documentation handoff
  • Identify systemic modeling or documentation issues and implement corrective standards
  • Recommend workflow improvements to reduce release errors

Training & Continuous Improvement
  • Train engineers and designers on CAD standards and release procedures
  • Provide guidance on modeling best practices
  • Continuously refine standards to improve scalability and quality

Required Skills/Qualifications:
  • 5+ years experience in mechanical design, CAD administration, or drawing control
  • CSWP or CSWE certification
  • Deep understanding of engineering drawing standards (ASME Y14.5 or equivalent)
  • Strong knowledge of revision control and configuration management principles
  • Advanced proficiency in at least one major CAD system (SolidWorks, Creo, CATIA, NX, etc.)
  • Experience working within PDM/PLM systems
  • Demonstrated ability to create and enforce standards across teams
  • Strong attention to detail and process discipline
  • Ability to independently approve or reject engineering documentation
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Equivalent professional experience may substitute for formal education

Preferred Skills/Qualifications:
  • Experience building CAD standards from the ground up
  • Experience in regulated industries (aerospace, defense, automotive, medical devices)
  • Familiarity with ITAR / export control labeling requirements (if applicable)
  • Experience defining part numbering schemas
  • Experience auditing large CAD databases for compliance
  • Leadership experience guiding multi-disciplinary engineering teams
  • Understanding of manufacturing documentation needs.

Education:
  • Associate's degree, technical certification, or apprenticeship in drafting, mechanical design, or related field preferred
  • Bachelor's degree not required
  • Relevant hands-on CAD and documentation experience is strongly valued.

Clearance Level Required: None.

Export Control / ITAR Requirement: This position requires access to information and technology subject to U.S. export control laws and regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms

Work Authorization Requirement:

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without the need for current or future employment visa sponsorship.

Travel Required: Less Than 10%

Salary: $121,000 - $158,000 annually

Salary depends on relevant work experience, education, training, essential skills, and/or other factors such as specialized or high-demand professions. In addition to the annual salary, the position will be eligible for an annual bonus. The pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of salary or annual bonus.
