The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Data Modernization & Innovation Office (DMIO) is looking to fill two Engineer Associate/Engineering Assistant 3/Engineer/Architect 1 Flex position's to help us Keep Alaska Moving!

Depending on the selected applicant, this position can be filled in Juneau, Fairbanks, or Anchorage. Salary information is listed below:

Engineer Associate & Engineering Assistant 3 (OT Eligible)
Juneau: $45.35 hourly
Fairbanks: $44.49 hourly
Anchorage: $43.19 hourly

Engineer/Architect 1 (Non-OT Eligible)

Juneau: $3,633.00 biweekly

Fairbanks: $3,563.25 biweekly

Anchorage: $3,459.75 biweekly

What you will be doing:
This recruitment will be used to hire two positions that support the Department's statewide transportation asset management efforts by collecting, analyzing, managing, and reporting data for Alaska's transportation infrastructure assets, including pavement, bridges, culverts, signs, guardrails, lighting, traffic signals, intelligent transportation systems, and other roadway and airport infrastructure hardware. The positions support asset inventories, condition assessments, performance measures, federal reporting, and long-range strategies that improve the performance, resiliency, and investment planning of Alaska's transportation system.
The incumbents will help evaluate asset conditions, identify preservation and rehabilitation needs, support lifecycle planning, and develop data-driven recommendations that inform project selection, investment strategies, and long-term system performance.

These positions will also help advance the Department's use of modern data collection methods, including sensor-based systems, mobile data collection, imagery, geospatial tools, automated workflows, and emerging artificial intelligence applications to better understand asset conditions and support engineering decisions.
Who we are looking for:To be successful in this position, the selected applicant will possess the following core competencies:
  • Data Management: Knowledge of the principles, procedures, and tools of data management, such as modeling techniques, data backup, data recovery, data dictionaries, data warehousing, data mining, data archiving, data disposal, and data standardization processes.
  • Performance Management: Knowledge of performance management concepts, principles, and practices related to planning, monitoring, rating, and rewarding employee performance.
  • General Engineering: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and theories of engineering and their practical applications.
  • Project Management: Knowledge of the principles, methods, or tools for developing, scheduling, coordinating, and managing projects and resources, including monitoring and inspecting costs, work, and contractor performance

Minimum Qualifications

Engineer Associate
Eight years of progressively responsible work experience in engineering, land surveying or architecture, of which one year was as an Engineering Assistant 3 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitution:
ABET accredited college or technical school courses in engineering, architecture, land surveying or a closely related curriculum may be substituted for the non-specific required experience (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month). A bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET may substitute for four years of the non-specific required experience.

Engineering Assistant 3
Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET.
AND
Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Or:
A bachelor's degree with a major in a branch of engineering from an institution not accredited by ABET.
AND
An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination.
AND
Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
Substitutions:
Four years of any combination of ABET accredited postsecondary education in engineering, architecture, or land surveying (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) and/or engineering, architectural or land surveying experience may substitute for the required degree.

Graduate study in engineering or architecture may be substituted for the required experience (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month).

Engineer/Architect 1
Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Architect.

Note: Positions in this class require professional registration as either an Engineer or an Architect. The employer will designate which professional field is required for each position.

Special Note:
Persons not registered in the State of Alaska must be registered in a state recognized by the State Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers and Land Surveyors eligible for comity in accordance with AS 08.48.191(b). Persons employed under this provision must become registered in Alaska within one year of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
