What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Engineering Systems Technician 3 or Engineering Systems Technician 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Accelerator Operations and Technology Division Applied Electrodynamics (AOT-AE) group is seeking an Engineering Systems Technician 3/4 to provide expertise, support, and technical help aspects of the LANSCE Injectors team operation that maintains and upgrades various electronic and high voltage equipment. The team plays a supporting role in LANSCE accelerator operations and beam delivery. The work of the Engineering Systems Technician may be mechanical or electronic. The individual will support scientists, engineers, operators, technologists, and other technicians and participate in activities that span from maintenance and upgrades of current systems to design work that will lead to development of the future ion injector & pulsed power systems. A questioning mentality is the main requirement to thrive in this position.

Additionally, the candidate will be required to provide on-call support after hours and on weekends. The on-call assignment will typically be one week per month during accelerator operations, which spans about seven months per year.

Engineering Systems Technician 3 $66,100 - $103,600
The selected Engineering Systems Technician will be learning from and working with experienced technologists, technicians, scientists, and engineers with a wealth of knowledge to share. The successful applicant will be required to obtain an understanding of alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) systems, mechanical construction, wiring and printed circuit board assembly, digital logic and electronics troubleshooting, basic water and air pressure systems, and hazardous chemical handling. The applicant will also be able to document system maintenance, operation and tests. The successful applicant's main job will be to learn from our team and assist with day-to-day operations. The successful applicant would be encouraged to pursue further electronics training.
Engineering Systems Technician 4: $72,800 - $115,400
In addition to what was outlined above at the Technician 3 level, Technician 4 will be required to lead troubleshooting and repair of various equipment and write system documentation for complex electrical/electronic systems.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

• Demonstrated competency using test equipment such as a voltmeter.
• Demonstrated ability to read and understand basic electrical wiring diagrams or schematics, working from documentation, diagrams, rough sketches, layouts, and verbal instructions.
• Experience with installation, maintenance, commissioning, and repairs of simple electrical/electronic equipment and/or systems.
• Experience with basic water and air pressure systems.

Additional Job Requirements for Engineering Systems Technician 4 level:

• Demonstrated competency using test equipment such as oscilloscopes.
• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and repair AC and DC electronic system and similar equipment.
• Experience with installation, maintenance, commissioning, and repairs on complex electrical/electronic equipment and/or systems, containing multiple integrated or discrete components.
• Experience with vacuum systems.

Education/Experience at Level 3: Position requires an associate's degree in a related field and a minimum of three (3) years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/ Experience at Level 4: Position requires an associate's degree in a related field and a minimum of five (5) years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, additional training and/or certification is preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

• Familiarity and/or experience with particle accelerator operations and/or ion sources, maintenance, or operations and maintenance at a similar complex facility.
• Experience with installation and testing of high-voltage and pulsed-power devices and/or systems.
• A current Q clearance, or the ability to obtain such, which normally requires U.S. citizenship.

Work Environment:

Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
