Location: Colorado Innovation Center, Golden
Roster: Monday to Friday, Full-time
An opportunity exists for an experienced and innovative power systems professional to join Fortescue's Colorado Innovation Center. Reporting to the Manager, Colorado Innovation Center, the Power Systems Engineer will assist in the evaluation, development, and prioritization of renewable energy and power system technologies that support Fortescue's decarbonization, electrification, and green energy objectives.
The role will identify emerging technologies, conduct techno-economic assessments, develop power system models, and establish technology innovation pathways for deployment across Fortescue's operations and future projects.
Key Responsibilities
• Technology strategy and assessment: identify, evaluate, and prioritize emerging energy, energy storage, grid integration, and power conversion technologies; monitor trends; develop technology roadmaps; and define R&D, demonstration, and deployment opportunities.
• Power system modelling and analysis: develop and maintain high-level models for renewable generation, storage, transmission, and microgrid architectures. Validate model assumptions and use sensitivity analysis to assess the potential value of long-term innovations.
• Techno-economic assessment: lead analyses of renewable power and energy infrastructure innovations; develop comparative business cases; quantify capital costs, operating costs, energy production, emissions impacts, and commercial value; and support innovation project prioritization.
• Project development and innovation: support research, pilot, demonstration, and commercialization programs; define technical requirements and success criteria with internal teams; identify deployment opportunities; and support external funding and collaborative research initiatives.
• Stakeholder engagement: build relationships with universities, national laboratories, technology developers, utilities, engineering firms, and industry partners; represent Fortescue externally; and communicate findings through executive presentations and decision-support materials.
Qualifications and Experience
• Required: Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, Energy Systems Engineering, or a related field.
• Experience conducting technical analyses, modelling, research, or engineering projects.
• Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems and communicate findings effectively.
• Preferred: PhD; experience with utility-scale renewables, microgrids, industrial electrification, energy storage, transmission planning, power markets, R&D programs, national laboratories, or university-industry partnerships.
• Passion for innovation, decarbonization, and accelerating the energy transition.
• Relevant experience across power systems, renewable energy generation technologies, energy storage, grid integration, industrial electrification, power system planning and operation, microgrids, distributed energy resources, power electronics, or energy system optimization/modelling.
• Techno-economic analysis; investment evaluation; and technical, economic, and risk analysis.
• Experience using relevant power system simulation, optimization, and modelling tools such as PSS E, PSCAD, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, ETAP, HOMER, MATLAB/Simulink, or equivalent.
• Familiarity with or interest in emerging AI tools and their application to accelerate both administrative tasks and technical programs.
• Strong analytical, quantitative, problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder-management skills.
• Ability to translate complex technical findings into business recommendations and work across research, engineering, strategy, and operations.
