The Role
Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.
This position is for a mechanical engineer in the A1B reactor plant fluids auxiliary systems section supporting the construction, testing, maintenance, overhaul and modernization of CVN 78 Class aircraft carriers, the Navy's newest and most advanced aircraft carrier. Successful applicants will be primarily responsible for supporting engineering efforts associated with reactor plant fluid system piping design which includes application of governing specifications, 3-D product model approvals, system fabrication drawing approvals, engineering evaluations, calculations required to resolve ship construction and vendor problems, developing reactor plant fluid system design improvements, writing technical letters to Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) and Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), and engineering support for CVN 78 Class aircraft carriers under construction and at-sea. Shipboard visits may be necessary for problem resolution and may involve access to radiological areas.
The candidate must be able to effectively communicate with other functional areas (e.g., Structures, Electrical, Components and Propulsion Plant Monitoring and Control) when necessary. Demonstrated written and oral communications skills are required. The successful candidate will be engaged and self-motivated.
Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master's Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Preferred qualifications include experience using Teamcenter® and the NX product model, reactor plant fluid system experience, and experience working with NAVSEA, NNL and the Shipyards.
