Who We Are

HII Mission Technologies is actively seeking a Engineer Mechanical to join our team!

This position supports Department E86 Nuclear Propulsion - Construction and Process Engineering. Specifically, this role is assigned to the E86 Structural and Shielding group within the Virginia Class Submarine program.

The Mechanical Engineer in this position will provide hands-on waterfront support, manufacturing engineering support, and technical oversight for the construction of Reactor Plant structures. Responsibilities include supporting day-to-day build activities, resolving technical issues, ensuring compliance with design and quality requirements, and coordinating with operations, planning, and engineering teams to maintain efficient and safe construction processes.

What You Will Do

  • Researches, plans, designs, verifies, validates and develops mechanical and/or electromechanical products and systems, such as metals, instruments, controls, plastics, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, resonance, hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy.
  • Recommends various technology options or approaches for system, processes, facility or program improvements in terms of safety, performance, efficiency or costs.
  • May be responsible for the transfer from R and D to manufacturing.
  • Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.
  • Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals or operation of product to include structures, mechanical and fixturing. Analyzes tolerances, durability, design allowables and structural modeling.
  • Become a structural discipline SME within the technical content of the group.
  • Resolve and review discrepancies in a technically sound method.
  • Develop new SOPs to capture processes as needed
  • Revise existing SOPs to reflect improvements in processes
  • Perform as liaison between various Engineering & Trades departments and the customer.
  • Attend and support meetings regarding Reactor Plant structures
  • Provide timely resolutions to waterfront and shop issues.
  • Develop and manage timelines and priorities for known upcoming milestones/key-events.
  • Teach/guide junior engineers in their development
  • A strong candidate should be effective in written and verbal communication; Problem Solving; Critical Thinking; Technical Writing; and have experience with Microsoft Office Programs.


What You Must Have

  • 5 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field; 3 years relevant experience with Masters in related field; or 0 years experience with PhD or Juris Doctorate in related field.
  • Candidate must have successfully completed an undergraduate engineering degree from an ABET accredited program.
  • Candidate must have experience utilizing industry-current Engineering design and analytical or modeling software.
  • Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a confidential security clearance.
  • Candidate must have a general understanding of the reactor plant construction process, comprehension of structural drawings, and project management experience.
  • Candidate must be a U.S. citizen.


Bonus Points For Having!

  • Experience with NDT standards as well as welding standards.
  • Experience with various NNS shipbuilding programs (i.e. SAP, i2, CATIA, Enovia, etc.).


Physical Requirements

May require working in an office, industrial, shipboard, or laboratory environment. Capable of climbing ladders and tolerating confined spaces and extreme temperature variances.
