The primary purpose of the Location & Surveys Unit is to provide Statewide engineering and geomatics analysis in the development of transportation facilities and acquisition of property in accordance with the best professional engineering and surveying practices consistent with all laws and regulations governing the State Highway System. The Location & Surveys Unit is looking for an Engineer II to serve as an Assistant Survey Division Team Lead.

In this role you will:
  • Work as a part of an engineering survey crew under supervision of higher-level engineers
  • Perform quality control/quality assurance functions
  • Assist in scoping negotiation, estimating and evaluating of Route Surveys/Geomatic Projects
  • Operate Electronic Engineering Survey Equipment
  • Operate CADD equipment
  • Support the Division Team Lead by
    1. managing projects
    2. supervising lower-level technical and professional staff
    3. consulting with higher-level L&S professionals, Central or Division Managed Project Teams including both Preconstruction and Construction personnel.
  • Perform the steps to maintain safety of self and worksite

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Management prefers applicants that demonstrate the following:
  • Experience utilizing the principles and practices of Civil Engineering and Route Location Surveying which includes all aspects of transportation and geomatics engineering rules, practices, standards, and principles as it pertains to highway design and the duties of the various Units, Branches, and Divisions of NCDOT.
  • Experience with geomatics engineering including GPS, geodesy, hydrology, property law, construction stakeout, utilities, GIS, Terrestrial and Mobile LiDAR, Bathymetric Sonar Technology, photogrammetry, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and CADD.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Department-wide topics such as Highway Design and construction as it relates to roadway, hydrology, structures, utilities, rail, and environmental.
  • Experience independently evaluating and exercising decision-making judgments regarding preliminary and design mapping, Construction and Right-of-Way plans, and legal documents.
  • Experience communicating technical information in a clear and concise manner to varied audiences in writing and orally.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
