Mid-level mechanical or electrical engineer in Mirion's Sensing Systems Division supporting the design, manufacturing, and qualification of radiation detection products, including compensated ionization chambers (CIC), uncompensated ionization chambers (UIC), proportional counters (PC), fission chambers, and associated signal processing electronics. The Engineer Level II prepares and verifies specifications for materials, parts, manufacturing, and tests, prepares technical and test reports with oversight, and supports the Procurement, Manufacturing, and Quality groups with growing technical independence. The role also begins to assist Senior Engineering with new product development efforts. This level introduces intermediate proficiency in technical writing, mechanical design, and electrical design, with continued growth in 3D parametric modeling, manufacturing engineering fundamentals, and radiation detector principles. The position may be filled by candidates with either a mechanical or electrical engineering background; prior exposure to nuclear engineering, radiation physics, or detector technologies is a strong plus but not required.
Essential Duties
- Prepare and verify specifications for materials, parts, manufacturing, and tests, under senior engineering oversight.
- Prepare technical reports and test reports with oversight.
- Assist senior engineers with design analyses and specification reviews.
- Support the Procurement group with sourcing materials, addressing supplier questions, and resolving technical issues.
- Support the Manufacturing group on production issues, process improvements, and engineering changes.
- Support the Quality group on identification of critical characteristics and resolution of technical questions and non-conformances.
- Assist Senior Engineering on new product development efforts.
- Continue to build proficiency in detector design principles and detector qualification testing, developing working knowledge of radiation/nuclear concepts as applied to product design.
- Provide informal technical mentorship to Engineer Level I personnel.
Essential Requirements
- Intermediate proficiency in technical writing; ability to independently author specifications, reports, and engineering documents subject to peer review.
- Intermediate proficiency in mechanical design (GD&T, blueprints, assemblies); ability to design and document assemblies independently for senior review.
- Intermediate proficiency in electrical design, including schematic capture and component selection for typical applications.
- Novice proficiency in 3D parametric modeling and simulation, with developing capability in parametric modeling and simple simulations.
- Novice proficiency in manufacturing engineering fundamentals (machining, welding, brazing), with a working understanding of common fabrication processes used in detector assemblies.
- Effective written, oral, and technical communication skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Teams, PowerPoint).
Additional Requirements
- Project Management - Novice proficiency.
- Project Estimating and Costing - Novice proficiency.
- Detector Design Principles (CICs, PCs, UICs, fission chambers, signal processing and electronics) - Intermediate proficiency.
- Detector Qualification Testing - Novice proficiency.
- Coursework, internship experience, or prior exposure to nuclear engineering, radiation physics, or gas-filled detector technology is a plus.
Education & Experience Requirements
- B.S. in Engineering or Engineering Technology (Mechanical or Electrical preferred; Nuclear Engineering background also welcomed).
- Minimum 2 years of engineering experience, or completion of the Engineer Level I requirements at Mirion.
