The Engineer II position is the intermediate level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer II position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with general supervision. An Engineer II is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer II effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is fairly complex and varied.
The Engineer III position is the advanced level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer III position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. An Engineer III is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer III effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressively complex and varied.
In this role, the engineer will serve within the distribution business unit, acting as the primary contact for customers, stakeholders, and internal teams throughout the entire lifecycle of new construction projects. Whether managing commercial or residential work orders, the engineer will take ownership of each project, ensuring clear communication and coordination from initial customer request through project completion. The successful candidate will be highly customer service oriented, capable of anticipating and addressing client needs, and adept at building relationships with diverse groups.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as the single point of contact for all new construction projects (commercial and residential), guiding customers through every phase-from design and planning to execution and close-out.
- Design a power delivery plan and prepare construction prints for each project utilizing engineering skills and several design tools.
- Coordinate with internal departments, external partners, and stakeholders to facilitate timely and effective project delivery.
- Foster a team environment, working closely with colleagues to ensure seamless project progression and resolve challenges as they arise.
- Communicate proactively and professionally, keeping all parties informed and maintaining transparency throughout the project.
- Demonstrate strong follow-up skills, attention to detail, and a dedication to delivering outstanding customer experiences.
Basic/Required QualificationsEngineer II
- Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer. A Master's degree in engineering can be considered in lieu of the Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree.
- Minimum 2 years of engineering experience
Engineer III
- Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer. A Master's degree in engineering can be considered in lieu of the Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree.
- Minimum 4 years of engineering experience
Additional Preferred Qualifications- Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.
- Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.
- Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.
- Understanding of basic principles of project management.
- Experience in the utility industry.
- Department specific experience applicable to the hiring department.
- Experience with CAD software, PoleForeman, and/or Maximo.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Working Conditions- The engineer will be required to field visit nearly every customer's construction site.
- Hybrid - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to the designated Duke Energy facility. Reliable, consistent transportation is required to ensure timely arrival at the applicable facility.
Specific Requirements- Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
