Job SummaryThe Field Engineer serves as a highly skilled technical professional responsible for planning, executing, analyzing, and interpreting complex field testing activities at gas processing plants, refineries, and other industrial process facilities. This role applies advanced engineering principles, fluid dynamics expertise, and independent judgment to evaluate hydrocarbon process streams, diagnose operational issues, and provide technical recommendations to customers and internal stakeholders.
Working with substantial autonomy, the Field Engineer functions as the primary technical advisor during field projects, exercising discretion in determining testing methodologies, troubleshooting process conditions, interpreting analytical results, and developing solutions to complex fluid processing challenges. The position requires advanced knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, phase behavior, and process engineering principles to ensure accurate testing, data integrity, and meaningful business outcomes for customers.
The Field Engineer is responsible for managing field projects from initiation through final reporting, including technical planning, real-time process evaluation, customer consultation, and preparation of professional engineering recommendations that influence operational decisions.
Your Responsibilities Will Be: - Independently plan, coordinate, and execute complex field testing projects at customer facilities with minimal supervision.
- Evaluate process conditions and determine appropriate testing methodologies based on engineering principles, customer objectives, and operating constraints.
- Apply advanced fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and process engineering knowledge to analyze hydrocarbon systems and validate test accuracy.
- Exercise independent judgment in modifying testing strategies, troubleshooting process anomalies, and responding to changing field conditions.
- Interpret technical data and trends to identify process inefficiencies, contamination sources, operational risks, and optimization opportunities.
- Develop engineering conclusions and recommendations that support customer decision-making and operational improvements.
- Exercises independent judgment and discretion on matters of technical significance.
- Analyze complex process data, field measurements, and analytical results to assess system performance and contaminant behavior.
- Perform engineering calculations related to fluid flow, pressure, temperature, density, phase behavior, and mass transfer.
- Identify root causes of testing deviations and process abnormalities through systematic technical investigation.
- Evaluate alternative corrective actions and recommend solutions based on engineering analysis and operational impact.
- Ensure the technical validity and integrity of field data through continuous evaluation and quality control.
- Serve as the primary technical consultant and subject matter expert during customer engagements.
- Translate complex engineering concepts and analytical findings into actionable recommendations for plant management and operational leadership.
- Lead technical discussions regarding testing results, process performance, operational limitations, and improvement opportunities.
- Influence customer decisions through professional expertise, technical credibility, and evidence-based recommendations.
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with plant personnel, engineering teams, and management stakeholders.
- Maintain responsibility for the successful execution of assigned projects, including project planning, risk assessment, resource utilization, and timeline management.
- Exercise discretion and independent judgment when addressing field challenges, equipment issues, safety concerns, and operational constraints.
- Determine appropriate corrective actions during testing activities to ensure data accuracy and project objectives are achieved.
- Evaluate equipment performance and recommend improvements to procedures, methodologies, and testing systems.
Required Qualifications: - 3+ years of experience in one or more of the following: technical field service, laboratory analysis, or systems troubleshooting.
- 2+ years of direct experience working inside gas processing plants, midstream facilities, or oil refineries is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to perform rapid, accurate mathematical calculations and unit conversions relevant to mass.
- Comfort working completely alone outdoors in heavy industrial environments, lifting to 50 lbs, and handling mechanical hardware.
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related hard science
Travel Requirements:- Ability to travel up to 80% of time and across international borders.
ADA Requirements:- Works in a office and shop setting, however, performs a significant amount of work
at the customer's facility; may need to work outside in all types of weather and in all kinds of
work environments.
- Compliance with company attendance standard. Work hours may vary during peak
production cycles. Incumbent in this role will be required to maintain a flexible work
schedule as some functions may require overtime.
- Requires substantial travel. Travel will generally be required in excess of 75 percent in
support of the position's responsibilities (driving record must meet acceptable company
standards and be maintained as such in order to operate a vehicle while on company
business).
- Hazards: May be exposed to extremes of heat and cold as well as unsafe environments;
occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and electrical equipment; possible
exposure to fumes or airborne particles; possible exposure to internal liquids. The noise
level in the work environment is usually moderate and occasionally very loud.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; stand; walk;
use hands and fingers to feel and handle; reach with arms and hands; talk and hear. The
employee is occasionally required to smell. Specific vision abilities required by the job
include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
- The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, occasionally lift and/or move
up to 75 pounds and may be required to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds on an infrequent
basis.
- Within the scope of the essential functions of this position, the employee is expected to
ensure that quality and safety standards are maintained and that assigned tasks are
performed in an efficient and productive manner.
