About the role

The Electrical Engineer will design, develop and test all aspects of electrical components, equipment, products, machinery and/or systems. Familiar with standard concepts, practices and procedures within Electrical Engineering and applies them to accomplish goals. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience designing, testing, and troubleshooting AC to DC power conversion circuits for high-volume consumer electronic products, including isolated and non-isolated power supply topologies such as flyback, buck, boost, and related converter architectures.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and troubleshoot AC to DC power supply circuits.
  • Develop isolated and non-isolated power converter designs including flyback, buck, boost, and other applicable switching power supply topologies. Perform transformer and inductor design, selection, specification review, and validation for switching power supply applications.
  • Analyze power supply performance including efficiency, thermal performance, load regulation, line regulation, transient response, ripple, noise, startup behavior, and fault protection.
  • Support EMI/EMC troubleshooting and mitigation for switch-mode power supplies.
  • Conduct design verification testing for AC/DC power supplies, including abnormal condition testing, overload, short-circuit, surge, ESD, thermal rise, and reliability testing.
  • Work with suppliers to evaluate critical power supply components.
  • Design analog and circuits, switch-mode converters, amplifiers, sensing circuits, and protection circuits.
  • Design digital, microprocessor-based circuits with understanding of the firmware requirements
  • Test prototypes and integrated systems as a part of development process
  • Develop and institute concepts and solutions to design and application problems
  • Operate in a team environment, practicing concurrent engineering by working closely with members on the development team, as well as Manufacturing, Marketing, Packaging, and other team members
  • Participate in design reviews related to assigned projects
  • Develop product specifications with development and marketing team
  • Perform evaluation of circuits for agency testing including UL, CSA, FCC, surge, ESD, dielectric, leakage current, thermal, and EMI/EMC requirements.
  • Understand manufacturing requirements of the products / systems developed and applying Design for Manufacture, Design for Assembly concepts to all functions
  • Assist manufacturing by traveling to the manufacturing facilities for engineering sample and pilot run start-ups as required
  • Perform tolerance, worst-case, thermal, and derating analysis for high-volume production power supply designs.
  • Assist in component documentation and review of component drawings
  • Evaluate and approve alternate and second source of components
  • Understand the markets served by the products / systems developed
  • Troubleshoot field problems
  • Support and update existing products as requested through the Engineering Change Request (ECR) program
  • Identify critical path functions required to meet product availability schedules
  • Develop and improve product development processes and other engineering processes
  • Prepare accurate and up-to-date reports for field and executive management
  • Additional duties as assigned


Qualifications

  • Ability to perform power supply calculations including duty cycle, transformer turns ratio, peak/RMS currents, inductance, flux density, efficiency, thermal dissipation, and component stress.
  • Familiarity with AC mains safety design practices including isolation, creepage, clearance, dielectric withstand, leakage current, fusing, MOVs, NTCs, X/Y capacitors, and surge protection.
  • Ability to review PCB layouts for power supply designs with focus on high di/dt loops, grounding, EMI control, thermal performance, isolation spacing, and manufacturability.
  • Ability to apply electronic design concepts to high volume consumer electronics
  • Familiar with analog design simulation tools (Spice Simulators)
  • Experience with failure analysis techniques such as DFMEA and PFMEA
  • Bench and system-level integration / debug / troubleshooting
  • Solution oriented; thinks creatively to solve problems
  • Ability to work in a team environment and independently
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel and PowerPoint

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science & Engineering required
  • Minimum 2 years' experience required
  • Experience with offline AC mains powered products, including universal input voltage design, line/load regulation, isolation requirements, leakage current, creepage, clearance, and safety agency considerations.Experience with design and development of consumer electronic products with technologies that are commonly found in IoT (networking, wireless, Microprocessor, digital design etc.
  • Experience with sensor interfacing and signal conditioning, circuit design using discrete semiconductors and magnetics
  • Experience with USB A and C power delivery standards
  • Experience using ECAD, Altium Designer desirable, with ability of schematic and layout creation
  • Experience working with safety and regulatory standards applicable to AC-powered consumer electronic products, including UL, CSA, FCC, and related agency requirements.

Travel

  • Up to 10%; both domestic and international travel required

Pay Range

$95,000.00 - $110,000.00 per year
