Job Description

BAE Systems Space & Mission Systems (SMS) is seeking a Systems Engineer to support the development of advanced EO/IR systems throughout the system lifecycle. This role will contribute to requirements development, system architecture, Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), integration, verification, and validation activities while working closely with Lead Systems Engineers, Chief Engineers, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.

The ideal candidate possesses a strong systems engineering foundation and a passion for applying MBSE and digital engineering techniques to solve complex technical challenges. This position offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge EO/IR capabilities supporting critical national security missions.

What You'll Do:

  • Support development, decomposition, allocation, and management of system requirements.
  • Develop and maintain MBSE models using Cameo/SysML to represent system structure, behavior, interfaces, and requirements traceability.
  • Assist in development and maintenance of system architectures, including logical and physical architectures.
  • Support creation and maintenance of system artifacts including:
    • Use Cases
    • Activity Diagrams
    • Block Definition Diagrams (BDDs)
    • Internal Block Diagrams (IBDs)
    • Sequence Diagrams
    • State Machine Diagrams
  • Participate in system trade studies and performance analyses.
  • Support integration of optical, sensor, processing, and mechanical subsystems.
  • Assist in development and execution of verification, validation, and calibration activities.
  • Support technical reviews including SRR, PDR, CDR, TRR, and PRR.
  • Support requirements verification and traceability activities using digital engineering tools.
  • Assist in identification and resolution of technical issues, risks, and integration challenges.
  • Generate technical documentation, engineering reports, and customer deliverables.
  • Collaborate with systems, software, hardware, test, and manufacturing teams to ensure successful system integration.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

On-Site Work Environment: This position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site five days each normally scheduled week in the primary work location. Travel and local commute between company campuses and other possible non-company locations may be required.

Working Conditions:
  • Work is performed in an office, laboratory, production floor, or cleanroom, outdoors or remote research environment.
  • May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required.
  • May access other facilities in various weather conditions.


Required Skills and Education

  • BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required plus 6 or more years related experience.
  • Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master's Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
  • A current, active Secret security clearance is required.
  • Experience with systems engineering principles and lifecycle processes.
  • Experience developing and managing system requirements.
  • Experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and SysML concepts.
  • Familiarity with digital engineering tools, such as Cameo Systems Modeler and Jama.
  • Experience supporting integration, test, or verification activities.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Preferred Skills and Education

  • Experience with EO/IR systems, sensors, imaging systems, or related technologies.
  • Experience developing SysML artifacts including BDDs, IBDs, Use Cases, Activity Models, and State Machines.
  • Familiarity with optical systems, focal plane arrays, image processing, or sensor calibration.
  • Experience with MATLAB, Python, or similar analysis tools.
  • Experience with requirements management tools such as Jama.
  • Experience supporting digital engineering initiatives.
  • MS degree in Engineering, Physics, or related technical field.
