Department Summary:

MITRE Lab's Energy, Environmental, Material and Chemical Sciences is seeking a senior engineer with expertise in power and energy technologies to work in a dynamic analytical environment focused on solving our customers energy technology and resilience challenges. This department serves as a vanguard for MITRE to meet the future needs of our customers, requiring technical excellence while encouraging creativity and fostering interests in current and emerging technologies across its diverse membership. Roles & Responsibilities:
  • Identify integration, deployment, and performance-assessment challenges for diverse energy technologies (e.g., storage systems, generation assets, micro-grid controls) using analytical, model-based (e.g., physics-based or systems-engineering) and experimental methods.
  • Analyze scientific, regulatory, and market-driven trends that shape the future landscape of energy solutions and assess their implications for MITRE customers and global supply-chain ecosystems.
  • Characterize the maturity, limitations, and capability gaps of manufacturing processes, supply-chain steps, and field-deployment pathways for a variety of energy-system components.
  • Design, prototype, and evaluate an expansive portfolio of power and energy technologies-ranging from advanced storage chemistries and power-electronics converters to distributed generation and micro-grid architectures-to generate actionable courses of action that satisfy customer requirements.
  • Frame and communicate technology performance, lifecycle cost, and value propositions within specific customer applications, enabling data-driven decision making.


Basic Qualifications:
  • BS and 2 years of relevant experience in one of the following fields: Chemical Engineering, Electrochemistry, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, and/or Physics.
  • Deep technical expertise in one or more battery technology areas, including: performance testing and prediction, safety analysis and management, packaging and ruggedization, manufacturing processes and quality control, system/application integration, in situ battery management and control system development, and chemistry design.
  • Strong technical writing and oral presentation skills.
  • The ability to conduct research and development of new energy and power technologies to meet customer requirements in a collaborative environment with both internal and external researchers.
  • Strong critical-thinking skills and a proactive, self-directed approach to problem solving and research execution with minimal supervision.
  • Applicants selected for this position will be subject to a U.S. government security investigation and must be able to obtain a Department of Defense SECRET clearance.
  • Per the U.S. Government's eligibility requirements, you must be a U.S Citizen to be considered for a security clearance.
  • This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site


Preferred Qualifications:
  • MS or PhD in one of the following areas: Chemical Engineering, Electrochemistry, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, and/or Physics.
  • Extensive experience and expertise, including recent publications, in the design and evaluation of batteries and battery systems.
  • Experience in designing and or testing early-stage energy storage products such as batteries, fuel cells, electrolyzers or similar.
  • Experience working with Environmental Health and Safety organizations to documents hazards, create Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), create a safe working environment by mitigating safety hazards.
  • Basic understanding of a broad range of energy storage, energy conversion, energy harvesting technologies, power distribution, and power management systems.
