SUMMARY:

Mortenson is currently seeking a Senior Project Manager I in our emerging Energy Storage Group with the ability to interact with a variety of staff at all levels in an ever-changing environment, remaining flexible, resourceful, proactive, and efficient with a high level of professionalism and confidentiality. Aptitude to anticipate problems, critical issues, and opportunities as they arise; along with the capability to creatively solve problems and bring together viable solutions. Excellent written and verbal communications skills are vital, with attention to detail equally important. The senior project manager will provide overall leadership direction to one large project or multiple projects to include the management of project quality, timeliness, safety, as well as mentoring the project team. Develop and enhance customer relationships by providing excellent service.

Traveling PM Role

100% Travel in the United States on rotation

Locations Include: TX, AZ, CA, CO, NM, Midwest

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Organization, flexibility, outstanding customer focus and strong communication are critical in performing duties which include, but are not limited to:
  • Manage the overall financial health of projects
    • Support and potentially lead EPC contract negotiations with customers, including assembly of technical exhibits, scope of work and project schedules to align with contract requirements.
    • Leading vendor procurement and bid/award phase for all major subs and suppliers. Including RFP creation, vendor solicitation, technical scoping, risk analysis, budget alignment, and contract negotiations.
    • Develop and maintain project financial projections and equipment projections
    • Determine and allocate project estimate into financial system
    • Determine cost codes, approve invoices, and make necessary budget management decisions
    • Provide financials and billings to Accounting for timely payment
    • Create monthly owner billings
  • Manage subcontracts and suppliers for the project
    • Oversee budget for and make selections of trade partners and suppliers
    • Handle billings and contract management, including contract buyouts
  • Manage Assistant Project Manager(s) and Project Engineer(s)
    • Provide job assignments and manage career development
    • Approve timecards for on-site team members
    • Provide ongoing feedback of work performance
  • Function as the main point of contact with the owner and on-site representative
    • Assist with the review of the owner agreement
    • Resolve site concerns for the owner or representative
    • Provide frequent interactions and service to build positive relationships and future work opportunities
  • Manage change orders
    • Determine when to submit to the owner or on-site representatives
    • Obtain the customer/architect's approval


Other responsibilities, including:
  • Lead Full Lifecycle Execution of BESS Projects -Oversee all phases of utility-scale battery energy storage projects-from site development and civil work to electrical installation and commissioning-ensuring alignment with client goals, technical standards, and Mortenson's values.
  • Champion Safety Across the Workforce - Take ownership of safety for the entire craft workforce, leading by example and enforcing Mortenson's Zero Injury culture through proactive planning, training, and daily engagement.
  • Drive Financial and Schedule Performance - Manage project budgets, forecasts, and schedules with precision. Ensure timely procurement, subcontractor coordination, and milestone delivery while maintaining profitability and client satisfaction.
  • Identify and Mitigate Risk Proactively - Anticipate project risks-technical, contractual, environmental, or logistical-and implement mitigation strategies early. Lead contingency planning and ensure risk registers are actively maintained and communicated.
  • Manage Change with Clarity and Control - Lead the change management process with discipline. Evaluate impacts, negotiate resolutions, and ensure all scope, schedule, and cost changes are documented, approved, and reflected in project controls.
  • Develop the Next Generation of Leaders - Invest in the growth of Project Managers and Assistant Project Managers by providing mentorship, clear expectations, and stretch opportunities. Foster followership through trust, accountability, and shared purpose.
  • Build Strong Relationships with Stakeholders - Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, utilities, consultants, and internal teams. Facilitate transparent communication, resolve conflicts, and build long-term partnerships.


QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction, Civil, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or Construction Management, or equivalent experience
  • A minimum of eight years construction management or related experience
  • Proven ability to assist with all responsibilities for complex projects
  • Detail orientation sufficient to organize and manage multiple project tasks
  • Possess basic understanding of construction law and generally accepted business practices
  • Preference for candidates with experience in one or more of the following: commercial construction, renewable energy project development, EPC contracting, or emerging technologies.
  • Microsoft Office, project, and pertinent web application skills at an intermediate level
  • Proven positive and professional attitude, and strong customer service skills
  • Ability to interpret and communicate Mortenson policies
  • Current driver's license

The base compensation range for this role is: $144,300 - $ 216,500. Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL - 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR - 10%, Washington, D.C. - 12.5%)

Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual's knowledge, skill, and experience with consideration given to internal equity.
