What We Are Looking For

Kinder Morgan's Products Pipelines business unit is seeking an Energy Financial Analyst for its Operations Optimization workgroup. The Operations Optimization workgroup manages the procurement and efficient use of electricity, natural gas, and drag reducing agent for all assets in the Products Pipelines business unit. This position provides a variety of accounting, analytical, and administrative services that support and promote the workgroup's objectives, including, but not limited to, the following areas: invoice processing, cost reporting, budgeting, and energy procurement/contracting assistance.

What You Will Do

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate energy-related invoice processing for the Products Pipelines business unit.
    • Maintain accurate physical and financial energy account information.
    • Serve as the primary liaison with a third-party Utility Bill Management (UBM) firm for account management, invoice presentment validation, and payment verification.
    • Manually process invoices using Kinder Morgan's proprietary Accounts Payable tools and procedures.
  • Oversee energy cost accounting and allocations.
    • Using proprietary cost management tools, monitor, track, and analyze energy costs down to the physical site level.
    • Work closely with accounting, communicating forecast details to ensure proper entries and accruals.
    • Participate in the month-end closing process, including preparation of journal entries for special contracts and cost reallocations; reconcile workgroup-level cost tracking with General Ledger and Income Statements.
    • Interface with Treasury and Tax departments as required for processing credits and assisting with proper tax application and/or exemption for energy accounts.
  • Manage energy performance metrics and variance reporting.
    • Create and manage financial forecasts and lead the annual budgeting process.
    • Collect information from various parties to aid in forecast development and performance evaluation.
    • Develop and distribute weekly energy forecasts (flash reports) for each Product Pipeline asset.
    • Develop and run financial models to evaluate energy projects and optimization
    • Analyze and report asset-level energy consumption/expenditure trends and budget variance causation.
    • Actively synchronize and use proprietary databases to support and promote the goals of the workgroup.
  • Provide support to other Energy Management functions.
    • Assist other workgroup members with energy procurement contracting and administration.
    • Manage the workgroup's Microsoft SharePoint site, including uploading current data sets and providing general site administration.
    • Coordinate database and system modifications required to incorporate new assets.
    • Other support duties assigned as needed.


What You Need

Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred. A minimum of three years of directly related work experience in the energy utility or pipeline operation industry, specifically with energy accounting and invoice processing, may be accepted as a degree substitute.


Experience/Specific Knowledge:
  • With a degree (or degree substitution), an additional two-year minimum experience in the energy utility or pipeline operation industry, actively working as an analyst, or in a related role.
  • Familiar with accounting/financial reporting principles.
  • Intermediate to Advanced proficiency level with Microsoft applications, including but not limited to Outlook, Excel, SharePoint, Word, PowerPoint, and Access, for word processing, spreadsheets, analysis, presentations, and information communication, storage, and retrieval. Proficiency with Excel and Access for data retrieval, analysis, and warehousing is particularly desired.

  • A sound background in mathematics is important to perform calculations and conversion work, as well as an ability to read/comprehend financial reports.
  • Must be accountable and take direction from management; keep required work schedules, which include regular and predictable job attendance; focus attention on details; follow work rules.

  • Most of the work will be conducted in an office environment. Extended periods of sitting are required for computer work and administrative activities.

PREFERRED Education, Experience, Certifications, Competencies, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Understanding of pipeline operations and interdependencies of facilities to aid in cost analysis.
  • Experience in accounting or financial disciplines
  • Experience with KM business applications, specifically with invoice entry and Lawson accounts payable/GL modules.
  • Knowledge of electric or natural gas utility rate components.
  • Knowledge of the various business units and entities within Kinder Morgan.
  • Knowledge of FERC and GAAP accounting rules.
