What You Will Do:We are looking for an Electron Microscope Scientist to support the Vaccine Research Center (VRC) at NIAID by overseeing cryo-electron microscopy operations and supporting structural biology research. This is a full-time position located in Bethesda, MD.
- Provide scientific, technical, and operational oversight of the cryo-EM facility.
- Support structural biology research through high-quality cryo-EM data acquisition and analysis.
- Manage facility operations, including instrument performance, user access, and workflow optimization.
- Oversee operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of cryo-EM instrumentation.
- Perform cryo-EM sample preparation, data collection, and computational analysis.
- Train and support users, including students, postdocs, and senior scientists.
- Collaborate with NIH investigators and provide guidance on experimental design.
- Develop and implement standardized workflows, SOPs, and best practices.
- Monitor project timelines, instrument usage, and overall facility performance.
What You Will Need:- Ph.D. in Biology or a closely related field.
- A minimum of THREE (3) years of experience in cryo-electron microscopy, structural biology, or related research.
- Demonstrated expertise in cryo-EM workflows, instrumentation, and facility operations.
- Experience with cryo-EM data collection, processing, and analysis.
- Ability to maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot advanced microscopy instrumentation.
- Strong organizational, project management, and multitasking skills.
- Ability to support and train a diverse scientific user base.
- Strong collaboration, communication, and leadership skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and scientific data tools.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Federal or DoD "public trust"; candidates must receive approved adjudication prior to onboarding with Guidehouse. Candidates with an active public trust or suitability are preferred.
What Would Be Nice To Have:- Background supporting shared scientific core facilities or user-based research environments.
- Familiarity with high-throughput cryo-EM data collection and automation tools.
- Exposure to negative-stain EM workflows and complementary imaging techniques.
- Ability to optimize workflows for improved throughput, reproducibility, and data quality.
The annual salary range for this position is $74,000.00-$124,000.00. Compensation decisions depend on a wide range of factors, including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, security clearances, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
